Literacy

Over the past fortnight, students have used their research to write a historical recount of events, which led to the extinction of the thylacine. Next, they researched and engaged in rich discussions around the topic "Should animals be kept in captivity?" It was very interesting to hear the students develop arguments to support their thinking by applying the information they have learned this term about habitat loss and human impact on wild animals. We finished off with each student using the PEEL format (Point, Example, Elaboration, Link) to write a convincing argument to support their opinions. I strongly encourage parents to ask their children to share their opinions regarding animals kept in captivity. I am sure you will be very impressed by their strong arguments for or against.

Maths

What a great improvement all students have demonstrated this term in their ability to calculate and recall their times tables. It's been very rewarding to see student challenging themselves and taking pride in their work.

Stage 2 students have been learning to calculate the area of squares and rectangles using square units. They have then applied this learning to using the 'area model' when multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit numbers.

Stage 3 students have been learning how to calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles, firstly by transforming these shapes into rectangles to find the area and then learning and applying the formula to find the area. After their hard work, stage 3 enjoyed learning a new math game called Beware. It might be a fun game to play during the holiday break, but 'beware' it can get pretty competitive!
