Learning in Action
Literacy
This fortnight, we have continued learning about narratives. We read Boy and Quiet Girl and retold the beginning, middle and end. We chose our favourite character from Boy and brainstormed adjectives to describe them. We challenged ourselves to put the adjectives into sentences. Students practised re-writing one of the narratives we have read in class, making sure their stories had a beginning, middle and end. Our vocabulary words for the week are ‘polite’ and ‘fierce’.
Preview: Students will plan and write their very first narrative!
Maths
Over the past fortnight, students have continued learning about sharing and that it means to share something into equal groups. Students learnt how to read the problem e.g 20 (cookies) SB (shared between) 5. Students also learnt how to record the problem and answer in their Maths books horizontally. Students enjoyed a creative activity where they had to share their cookies between two plates for their Cookie Monster.
We have also started learning about Money. Students have learnt what money is used for, why we use money and discussed if they have ever bought something with their own money before. Students explored the various coins and notes through play and enjoyed learning about the value of money.
Preview: Next week we will continue learning about money and revisit our unit on location and transformation.
Inquiry
With a few interruptions this fortnight we have not been able to run full inquiry sessions, however our ‘Waste Warriors’ are always on the lookout! After learning about the different types of rubbish, prep students have been actively checking bins and ensuring we are getting rid of our waste correctly! Some students have taken it further by finding ways to repurpose items so they do not become waste. Prep D used scrap paper to make their voice birds rather than using brand new paper! We have also seen an increase of prep students joining the green team to clean up the school on Fridays.
Preview - We will continue looking at different types of waste, focusing on recycling and composting
Wellbeing
The past fortnight has seen students begin their work on Positive Gender Relations during Respectful Relationships sessions. Last week, students drew pictures of themselves playing with their friends at school, and we discussed the following questions:
- How do we make sure that the games are fair for everyone who is playing?
- What are the rules?
- Who can play?
- How do we play together?
- How do we play alongside people playing other games?
Students have completed their final lesson for Friendology, and we are now reviewing the concepts learned throughout the year.
Preview: Next week, students will continue ‘Positive Gender Relations’ by looking at the question ‘What is fair? What is violent?’. We will continue to review and revise concepts from Friendology.
Voice
This fortnight our students delved further into voice by reading the award winning book ‘Cay and Adlee find their voice’ by Cali and Rus Quaglia. This reminded students that voice not only helps everyone but that each voice is unique and can be used for different purposes. For example, some voices are ‘hopeful’ and have dreams for the future, some voices are ‘brave’ and stand up for others. We repeated the motto ‘My voice is my choice,’ and came up with words to describe our own voices. We then made characters with whatever resources we wanted!
Preps Presenting…
This fortnight the Prep B students nominated Blair Kemp to use his voice and present a shelter that he created for his toy dog.
