Battle of the Bands

South East Victorian Region held a Battle of the Bands in our Cranbourne Community Theatre. Cranbourne Secondary students performed in 3 bands along with 29 other bands (over 180 students!) from schools across our region.

The second band to perform for the day was the Cranbourne Junior Band (Nayandit Malual, Evan Goodman, Calen McCreath, Luca Nuzzaco, Eddie Lonski, Zakk Roschutz & Gaeb Ambos) who played Zach’s Song (School of Rock) and Flowers (Miley Cyrus).

Some of the students have only been playing for a few months and did a brilliant job; a testament to the amazing work Katarina Mizzi has done with all our band students. Nayandit did stellar work, covering all the vocal duties in the absence of her usual bandmates Neivannah Lalaloa & Amelia Rahbar.

Around noon the Cranbourne Senior Band (Kasey Stiles-Harkin, Alex Brewer, Sarah Pregara, Asha Payton, TK Upton & Kayden Simmons) took to the stage to do tight and stylish versions of Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) and The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie), each song arranged by Kat and the students.

Later in the day, our third college band, AFU (Hunter Wallace, TK, Alex, Kayden & Kirk) played their original song, Unspoken, and Crying Lightning (Arctic Monkeys). As with all our bands’ performances, they were passionate and professional, receiving thunderous applause throughout the set.

The Cranbourne Secondary College students played a huge part in fostering an amazingly supportive atmosphere among all performers on a day that all participants will remember fondly. It’s been many years since this type of event has been held in this region, and the atmosphere was more buoyant than any we’ve seen in the past.

32 bands. Over 180 students. More than 20 teaching staff from across the region. An experience that may well have kicked off some future careers in the music industry.
