World Mission Month

The month of October is World Mission Month. It raises awareness and support for the work of Catholic Mission, a mission agency of the Catholic Church that supports children and communities in need in 160 countries around the world.

The theme for World Mission Month this year is based on the words of Luke 24:13-35: “Hearts on Fire, Feet on the Move.” It calls each of us to show compassion for others and to contribute to the work for justice in our world.

The focus ministry for World Mission Month 2023 is the work of the Church in Timor Leste. Situated 150km from the east of Dili, Venilale is a town of 16,000 inhabitants. Following decades of unrest, Venilale has limited access to resources and infrastructure, and faces a range of challenges, including the lack of access to healthcare professionals.

The Salesian Sisters, who first went to Venilale to support the education of young children, discovered a great need for medical assistance. In 1995, driven by their commitment to God’s Mission and hand-in-hand with the local community, they created the Maria Auxiliadora Clinic, a place dedicated to healing and health education. The Clinic aims to address the gaps and empower the community to have autonomy over their health and well-being.

If you would like to know more about the work of Catholic Mission or donate to support their work, you can do so via the Catholic Mission website, https://www.catholicmission.org.au/.

Mission Sunday Mass

Our Catholic Mission Ambassadors for this year – Emma MacFarlane (Year 9, Villa Spada) Heidi Dowling (Year 9, Rieti) – will officially launch the World Mission Month Appeal at the 5.30pm Mass this Sunday 22 October at Little Flower Church, Turner Road, Kedron. All students and families are invited to attend. I extend my thanks to Emma and Heidi for the time they have given to prepare their presentation.

Remembrance Day

Observed on the 11 November each year, Remembrance Day commemorates the end of First World War hostilities on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month in 1918. It allows us to not only acknowledge the loss of life in the Great War and in all wars in which Australians have fought, but to also commit ourselves to the cause of peace in our world today.

This year, the Kedron-Wavell Sub Branch RSL will hold a commemorative service at 10.30am on Saturday 11 November at the cenotaph, Kedron-Wavell Services Club, Kittyhawk Drive, Chermside. All students and families are welcome to attend. Please refer to the information and permission letter sent to all families via email, MyMtA and the College App.

Year 10 Reflection Day

Yesterday, the Year 10 students attended their annual Reflection Day. Through the facilitation of Mr Michael Fitzpatrick, students prepared for their leadership roles as Senior students of our College community. They explored the concept of servant leadership, recognised the strengths of their cohort, and identified what they need to embrace or change to ensure they give their best in their Senior years.

The students also demonstrated great skill in their knowledge of music trivia and in their rendition of songs from the last four decades.

I extend my thanks to the Year 10 RE and SOR teachers who accompanied the students and to the Year 10 cohort for their considered engagement and enthusiastic participation in the day. It was both positive and memorable.
