Our Journey

Our target group was Arabic/Assyrian Refugee families and Indian families who spoke little or no English. We created a program that encouraged  and supported parents of refugee background to engage with kids and play an effective role in their kids’ learning and education process at school and at home. We met weekly, over two terms where information sessions were provided by  School staff, RESP staff and facilitators, Foundation House Child Youth & Family team. These sessions were about school day, routines, values, using compass, reading reports, parent / teacher interviews and Respectful Relationship curriculum, we also developed printed and translated resources so that parents could access in their home language.   Students and parents were then involved in art activity to maintain home culture and the celebrate the new culture. We wanted to engage with these families, who were hesitant to come to the school to ask questions and to help their children.
