Italian classes started in Term 1 with the excitement of knowing that “Carnevale” was only a matter of a few weeks away. In fact, it took place on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Learn Street was transformed into an Italian Piazza complete with decorations, posters, masks and bunting in the Italian colours. Street performers entertained the masses with juggling, balloon modelling and music. What a sight - so colourful and festive.
Students and staff wore costumes of choice, some adorned with a Venetian mask either handmade or original. In class, students watched videos of Italian Carnevale set in Venice and became familiar with the characters of Carnevale.
Students learnt to say the colours in Italian – used flash cards to play games and learnt the Rainbow Song in Italian. Numbers in Italian were also fun as students played number games and Tombola (Bingo) using the Italian words. Semester 2 involved a Unit on Pinocchio along with the characters of the story. Students also became familiar with the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen – “La Gallinella Rossa”. All in all, students became familiar with the sound of Italian and could engage in mini conversations and play familiar classroom games in Italian.
