Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Katie & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: This fortnight in Reading, the students have been practising their notetaking skills. We have been reading through texts and taking notes of the important parts and finding ways to shorten words to make notetaking faster but also effective. The students have also been looking at elements of persuasive writing. We have discussed what opinion, modality words and sequence words, and how to use them in an impactful way.

Writing this fortnight has seen the students finishing their persuasive texts and begin to explore information texts. Students have been using their notetaking skills to research Australia’s neighbouring countries to use in their information texts.

Numeracy: This fortnight, the Grade Fours worked on perimeter, creating perimeter people and determining what their perimeter is. The students also designed their own zoo determining the perimeter and area of each enclosure. Students are also exploring capacity. They measured and compared the capacity of different sized and shaped containers.

Inquiry:  To compliment our new Inquiry unit, the Grade Fours with some special parent volunteers went on a Melbourne walk with a focus on immigration and the impact that was made on our city. We met our tour guides at Federation Square and broke up into groups to explore laneways, arcades and buildings. We walked through Chinatown and the Greek precinct, ending the tour in QV Melbourne. The students had the opportunity to try some asian snacks and share information about different people who made an impact on Melbourne. Some examples are; William Barack, John Batman, Eliza Callaghan and Simcha Baevski.
