Week 5, Term 4

🗓️ Dates for Term 4:

Monday 30th October - 3rd November: Book Fair @ WPPS

Wednesday 1st November: Grandparents Day, 9.30 - 11am

(Please ensure your child brings a packed morning tea for them to share with their grandparent - see email for further details)

Tuesday 7th November: Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday

Wednesday 15th November: Prep Concert - Sky Colour

Monday 20th - 24th November:  Swimming (every day of the week)

Wednesday 6th December: Christmas Carols evening

🎶 Prep Concert: The Prep concert is on the 15th of November and we are busily singing our songs to prepare for it. Remember to keep practicing your lines at home!

🍎 Packing food for school: Our Preps are growing rapidly and require lots of food to help their brains and bodies get through the school day! Please ensure that you are packing adequate amounts of food for your child. The school is unable to provide food for students who still feel hungry after eating everything that has been packed for them, so it essential students they are provided with enough food to sustain them for the whole day.

🏊🏼‍♀️ Getting ready for swimming: As our swimming program is fast approaching it is important that our students are prepared with their swimmings bags. All items of clothing need to be clearly named. Your child will need to be able to independently dry and dress themselves promptly after swimming lessons. It may be a good idea to practise at home to build confidence.

👧🏻👦🏽 Child Safe Training: If you would like to be a volunteer at our school to help with programs (eg. swimming, helping in the Art room, working in the SAKG program, etc), it is essential that you have participated in one of the Child Safe Volunteer Training sessions with Adele Brice. There are two more sessions this year:

  • Friday 3rd November 9-9.40am (onsite)
  • Wednesday 8th November 5.30-6.00pm (online)

The link for the session is available on the Parent Sentral Calendar.

🗞️ News Groups for Wednesday 1st November: My Grandparents are special because ...

📚 Reading

Students will be predicting 'what comes next?' We will be exploring what might happen if the story kept going. Preps are also revisiting word families and rhyming words.

What can you do at home?

-Log into Reading Eggs and find a suitable text (remember to change the age for 5 - 7 years old).

-Assist your child to read their take home book each night and their magic words.

-Help your child to read with expression and fluency as they read.

-After you finish a story, ask your child 'what comes next?'...

🔡 Phonics

This week we will be learning about how 'y' can say a different sound such as 'i' (as in shy) and 'e' (as in happy).

What you can do at home?

-What words can you find where 'y' makes a different sound?

-Use your sound ring to continue to practise letter names and the sounds they make. Play some games using the sound ring cards (ideas are on the ring).

📝 Writing

Students will be writing a story about Mr Happy, and will be encouraged to add adjectives and details about his adventure.

We will also be working on our handwriting for letters r, n, m and h, ensuring they are correctly sized using the dotted thirds guide.

What can you do at home?

-Continue to encourage correct pencil grip (pointer on top).

-Encourage correct formation of letters.

-If your child writes at home, assist them to hear and write the sounds in words.

🔢  Maths

Students will learn the concept of ordinal number (a number defining the position of things in a series). We will be exploring these concepts in fun and interactive ways such as races, games, craft and lining up. Students will be learning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th.

What can you do at home?

-Explore the Mathseeds app on the iPad. You might want to choose games / tasks that involve the concept of ordinal number.

-Your child may like to practise this skill by playing the online ordinal number vegetable game https://www.softschools.com/math/ordinal_numbers/games/

🌏 CBL - Discovery 🔎

We will be mind mapping our ideas of what we have discovered this year.
