Student Voice & Student Agency

On Wednesday, members of the leadership team met with a focus group of students from Year 3 to Year 6 to talk about high expectations in mathematics teaching and where students felt that they had opportunities to have a voice in what they are taught, and where they  might influence the curriculum. We talked to Colin, Hibo, Max F, Nicholas, Max, Julia, Luca, Ella, Mia, Kane and Ava.

Thank you for your honest feedback. You amazed the leadership team with your thinking and your capacity tell us what you value , and what you dont. We couldn't be more proud of you. Thank you.

We asked the students the following questions:

  1. How challenging is learning mathematics for you in your grade?
  2. How do you know that you are learning?
  3. Who gives you feedback about your work, and when?
  4. What would you want to improve about the teaching of maths in your grade that would make it better for your learning?
  5. When explaining your reasoning would you rather write or speak?
  6. How are goals set for your learning?
  7. What sort of choices do you have in the work that you do in your class?
  8. What would make your learning at school more interesting or effective for you?
  9. Are your ideas and opinions valued in the classroom? What makes you feel that way?

Their feedback will  influence our planning for 2024 and beyond.

The final question was.  Out of 10 how much do you enjoy math? 1 being not at all - 10 being love it! Here are their individual responses. 8.5, 9, 10, 10, 7.5, 9, 6, 6, 7.5, 8, 9.5.

Thank you's

Organising the fair has required hard work and dedication from so many individuals across the school, it is impossible to individually acknowledge everyone. Sorting toys, books, plants, cakes, bbq, auctions, raffle organisation, brica brac, etc etc.

The PFA led by Andrea, and now Cat and Elena, along with the “can do” energy and dedication of Sue,  Mollie and the admin team are really bringing the event home. We couldn’t have asked for a better team. Thank you!

For answers to Fair related questions contact:-Cat (6K, 5SB) on – 0421 176 673 and or Elena (1G) on – 0402 827 078.

Mr Bull and families including children came to school last Saturday and accomplished many tasks including, cleaning the school grounds including the drinking taps, clearing the long jump pit, cleaning the paths and walkway, leveling the sandpits and other general maintainance. Thank you!

Thanks to the staff and parents who went to Year Four camp. We cannot run these fabulous experiences without you. I'm looking forward to publishing the reflections from camp next week. In the meantime here are some pictures.

Transition

At Ivanhoe Primary School we do all we can to facilitate a calm and happy transition for primary school students. The transition from one school year to the next can be a significant milestone for primary-age children. Ensuring this shift is smooth and positive is crucial for their emotional well-being and academic success.

Throughout Term 4, we implement a buddy system where older students or 'transition buddies' can guide younger students. This mentorship not only eases the transition but also builds a sense of community within the school. At these meetings, students share success stories and are able to ask questions about the coming year. Hearing about positive experiences can inspire confidence and reassure the younger students.

In the last few weeks of this term, the students will be able to meet their new teacher, classmates and classroom. Familiarising them with the physical space can help alleviate anxiety and make them feel more at home in their new environment.

By keeping parents and carers in the loop about this transition process, we hope that you too can help support your children during this next phase in their primary education.

Planned Works

This week the painters are in the main Waterdale Rd building painting the ceilings in the Year 4 classrooms. Later in the month many of the eaves around our Year 1 buildings will be replaced. After the Fair, the Foundation playground will be out of action for a period while drainage issues are resolved and the rubber surface replaced or repaired. In the Christmas break, new bitumen will be installed near the rear of the Waterdale Rd building, where the Year Fours exit, and the rubber mounds will be replaced.

Some of these works will prove challenging to our current operations, but in the long run well worth some temporary inconveniences.

Holiday Program Survey - closes Friday 17th Nov.

A number of families have expressed interest in IPS supporting a Holiday Program onsite. The school worked with a third party provider in 2021 to provide a Holiday Program.  As a result of the low number of participants, likely impacted by the pandemic, the provider elected not to continue. The School Council would like to retest interest from the school community for a potential program offering in 2024.

Scan the QR code to vote or go to IPS Holiday Program: Expression of Interest

A response is required by Friday the 17th of November.
