Learning and Teaching

Green Team News
It was a perfect afternoon to spend time in Brendan’s Garden, and the Green Team gathered with great enthusiasm, eager to hear what the session would involve. The excitement grew even more when we shared the results from the Red Hill Show. Smiles and applause filled the garden as students learned we had won Best Basket of Produce Grown in a School Garden.
We then wandered through the garden beds to see what was ready for harvest. The team was particularly impressed by the pumpkins, whose tendrils had stretched out and wrapped themselves around the gate.
With gloves on, it was time to get to work. The students rotated through three tasks: planting garlic bulbs in pots, sowing broccoli seeds, and planting cos lettuce seedlings in a garden bed. We were fortunate to have an extra helper, Christine—grandmother of Ida, Daisy and Dulcie Young—who guided the students as they planted the garlic. This was the first time the Green Team has attempted to grow garlic, making it an especially exciting activity.
Jess Young supported the students in sowing broccoli seeds—another first for the team—while Mrs Coggin worked with students to plant the cos lettuce seedlings. We are hopeful they will thrive, provided the rabbits, snails and birds don’t get to them first!
To finish, students harvested any ripe produce they could find. Many went home with marrows, corn, zucchini, eggplant, capsicum or tomatoes. Our pumpkins are continuing to grow well and should be ready for harvest next term.
It was another enjoyable and productive afternoon in Brendan’s Garden.
