Years 10-12
Meaghan King
I would like to congratulate our Years 10-12 students on their recent involvement in this year’s ANZAC Day ceremonies, both at school last Friday and in the wider community on Saturday. Our students took on a range of roles and their leadership, maturity and respectful participation were admirable.
A reminder that Term 2 brings with it increased expectations of all of our senior students. For students enrolled in a Year 10 or Unit 1 subject, exams will take place in the latter half of this term. For students enrolled in a Unit 3-4 sequence, now is when it is most important to stay on top of workload, as there are really only two terms left before VCAA exams take place.
Sue Clay (Careers Practitioner) will visit Charlton College for career and course advice on the following dates this term. Students are encouraged to book an appointment with Sue at least once this term, using the sheets available between the upper and lower sections of Room 1. Parents are also welcome to meet with Sue. To make an appointment, contact Miss King via the office or at meaghan.king@education.vic.gov.au

Next week, it looks like heaters might be cranked up for the first time this year. This is a reminder that students and parents may need to check the availability and fit of winter uniforms. It is important that families remember that tracksuit pants, jeans, non-school jumpers and beanies are examples of items that are NOT in line with the uniform policy, and should not be worn to school. Charlton Football, Netball and Hockey hoodies are also not to be worn in lieu of the school jumper. We do understand that there can be some delay at this time of the year as families attempt to sort out uniforms. If this is the case, students may bring a note from home, which should be passed on to the Teacher Advisor, explaining why they are out of uniform.
This term, Claudia Cox from the NCLLEN will be running four Branch Out Mentoring sessions with our Year 12 students during their lunch times.
Branch Out Mentoring is a peer-to-peer transition program tailored for Year 12 students, aiming to support their journey from high school into further education, vocational training, or the workforce. The content of the sessions includes:
Digital Wellbeing (managing phone use developed in partnership with Ctrl Your Scroll)
Money Matters (saving, Centrelink, managing expenses)
Applying for Scholarships
Gap Years
Moving out (housing options, share-housing, how to get a rental, what you need to know/expect)
Adulting 101 (living independently, bills, getting a job, etc)
Our first session was held on Tuesday 28th April with the focus on ‘Moving Out’.
We look forward to the remainder sessions which will take place on the 12th May 26th May and 2nd June.

Some of our Year 11 and 12 VCE students have the opportunity to participate in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) or a School-based Apprenticeship (SBAT) as a component of their course. Generally, this is a component of the VCE Vocational Major, but some students manage to fit a placement into a non-Vocational VCE course.
Thank you to Abby and also to the NCLLEN for the following photographs, to go along with an update on their activities.
Tully is currently completing a SBAT one day a week with Greenhill Engineering where he is working towards a Certificate III in Engineering whilst completing VCE. Tully recently built a bandsaw bench and racking system.

Sam is currently completing a SBAT with Adelaide Farms two days a week where he is working towards a Certificate III in Agriculture whilst completing Year 11VM.

Zach is currently doing a Structured Workplace Learning placement on a Wednesday in the College Canteen with Caryn Lamour whilst completing VM Year 11 and Certificate II in Cookery at NCTTC.

School Based Apprenticeships and Structured Workplace Learning pathways allow our students to connect with local businesses where they are able to explore their career interests with a hands-on experience.
Year 11 and 12 Biology students have been working hard on their practical skills, investigating Photosynthesis and Cellular respiration. Year 11s also dissected a kidney recently to practice their skills before participating in a more exciting dissection experience next week.

Mathematical Methods students are undertaking their studies virtually. Each week they speak to their teacher directly either as a group or individually. Here the unit 3 students can be seen having a catch up.
