Important Safety Message for Families

The Hills Police Area Command has asked schools to help raise awareness about two growing safety concerns affecting young people across the district.

1. Unsafe and illegal e‑bike use

Police are seeing an increase in students riding illegally modified e‑bikes and trail bikes on roads, T‑Ways and shared paths. Many of these bikes exceed legal power or speed limits, making them classified motor vehicles. This means they require registration, insurance and a licensed rider — conditions most young people cannot meet. Modified batteries also pose a significant fire risk and are banned on NSW Trains and Metro services.

Families are encouraged to check that any e‑bike their child uses is compliant and safe, especially if it is being used to travel to and from school.

2. High‑powered vehicles and provisional drivers

Police also reported a recent incident in Kellyville where a 17‑year‑old P‑plate driver crashed a prohibited high‑powered vehicle. Thankfully no one was injured, but it highlights the importance of parents monitoring what vehicles young drivers are using. Families can check whether a car is approved for P‑plate drivers using the Service NSW online tool.

With school holidays approaching — a time when risk‑taking behaviour often increases — police are asking schools and families to work together to reinforce safe choices around e‑bikes and driving.

We appreciate your support in helping keep our students safe.
