Year 7 Camp - Congratulations!

On behalf of the staff at Brentwood and the staff at Phillip Island Adventure Resort, we wanted to extend a huge congratulations to all the Year 7 students.

They were exceptionally well behaved, kind, polite and enthusiastic throughout the 3 days on camp. We are so proud of them, and you should be to.

The staff at Amaze N Things said they were the best-behaved group they have ever had.

Keep up the awesome work!

Kind Regards, Lauren Sadler

Daniel Draper Memorial Staff vs Students Cricket Match

On Friday February 23rd, staff and students competed in the annual Daniel Draper Memorial Cricket Match. The cricket game pits staff against Year 12 students in a T20 to play for the Draper Shield. The match is to commemorate Daniel Draper, a student and avid member of the Brentwood community who tragically passed away in 2004. The Draper Memorial Cricket Match has been played ever since, making this year the 20th iteration!

The staff won the match in 2023 after a few straight losses and were looking to go back-to-back. The students were sent into bat, and got off to a hot start, putting on 64 runs in the first 6 overs! Some tight and tidy bowling in the middle overs slowed the run rate, however some late hitting took the students to a total of 128, all out after 16 overs.

An incredible run rate of 8 an over!

Key figures for Student Innings:

Noah Smith – 51*                                          Jim Davatzis – 3/0 (2) – an incredible spell!

Charlie Ryan – 30                                          Chris Tsolos – 2/7 (2)

Connor Sherrin - 27                                     Joy Hicks – 2/12 (2)

The staff knew getting this total would be challenging. Tight early bowling and two staff needing to retire early meant the staff were behind the required run rate early and despite some solid batting in the middle order, the total was out of reach. The staff fell well short, finishing on 7/74 after their 20 overs.

Key figures for Staff Innings:

Jim Davatzis – 23*                                        James Langford – 2/10 (2)

Chameera Arawwala - 16                          Charlie Lewis – 1/3 (3)

                                                                          Mike Merakis – 1/5 (2)

It was great to see Bill Exton return for the game to play and as always having Ray Draper (Daniel’s father) come down made it very special.

Thanks as always to Sue Bach for scoring and for all the staff and students for participating in this special event for our community.

The game was played in great spirits!

Brentwood Debating Teams

The Brentwood School Debating Teams competed in their first debate on Thursday the 22nd Feb. All teams did a great job on the night, but well done on the D Grade team in particular who won the debate, with Aidan Leong winning Best Speaker.

A great effort for his first ever debate!

Term 1 House Day

On Monday the 26th of February at the Wattle House Assembly Year 12 Student Shelby Vicic received The Jan Kennedy Award presented by the Local State member of Glen Waverley John Mullahy. Shelby Vicic received the award due to her dedication to entering her final year of high school who embodies kindness and authenticity making her approachable and a friend to all. Her remarkable work ethic and resilience shine through not only in academics but also in her leadership roles. Shelby has excelled in our Duke of Edinburgh program, achieving Bronze, Silver, and now Gold, and has taken the lead in organising numerous sporting and community events within the school, which has made her the perfect candidate to be one of our Year 12 Wattle House Captains in 2024.

In addition, we had a very successful House Day with students and even teachers participating in a range of events through Aspire. Students and teachers competed in a plank challenge to see how long an individual could hold a plank. In addition, students also participated in a memory challenge game where students had to attempt to memorize all 24 pictures on the screen and write them down correctly. Also, on the day all house leaders were given their leadership badges due to being selected to be a part of the Brentwood Student Leadership team.

Overall, the day was a massive success due to the hard work of all House Captains and assistant house captains from every year level. A massive thanks to the Director of Student Leadership, Ms. Saathoff, for her hard work and support in the running of events.

Year 8 Japanese Judo Incursion

On the 28th of February, we got to experience a form of Japan’s rich culture through judo, an Olympic martial art. On the day we were instructed by Sensei Douggie Noack, a judo specialist who has been practising the art for over 45 years. We first started the lesson by learning about what judo was morally, Sensei explained how Judo stood as a metaphor for respect, teaching us to have integrity, and to always respect our opponent in both a duel and in the real world.

First, we started with learning to roll and break falls, after this, we were taught how to restrain an opponent. Then we started to do some simple sparring, but that wasn’t all, we were also taught how to gently throw an opponent by lowering our centre of gravity. The day was immensely fun and amusing, we were taught by great people during the day. We had a blast being able to try out new things at school with our mates.

Goethe Institute Awards

The presentation of the Goethe Institute awards to our fellow German students was a memorable event, with honor and appreciation. The Goethe Institue award were from the exam results that the German Students completed in 2023. It was evident that each recipient felt deeply represented and acknowledged for their accomplishments, as these moments would usually go under the radar. This time however the recipients felt as if it was a moment of validation, as their hard work and dedication to mastering the German language paid off.

This not only celebrated the individual success but also demonstrated Brentwood's German program, encouraging the younger students to keep learning German to show them what they can achieve.

Electronic device use at Brentwood Canteen

We would like to thank you for your continued support with the Personal Mobile Devices Policy. We have noticed students trying to utilise their phones as a payment method at the canteen and ask that families look to make other arrangements.

Mobile phones are not to be used at the canteen as they are not allowed to be in use between the school hours of 8.45am and 3.05pm.

Students can make payment via an EFTPOS card or cash.

Thank you for your cooperation.
