Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw Marist take on St Peters Lutheran College across our range of summer sports as well as a host of supplementary matches against other schools. It was a good weekend for the aggregates with Marist winning 13 and losing 3 in volleyball and 12 wins and 3 losses in cricket matches.

One Friday night the 1st XVIII were outpointed by a resilient Ambrose Treacy College in a supplementary match. ATC played strongly and took their chances, particularly late in the game to eliminate and thoughts of a comeback from us. Our 1st VI were brave again, going down for the second weekend in a row in a tight five-setter. The boys displayed grit and determination along with a high degree of skill to push their more fancied opponents to the edge. The 1st XI looked good at lunch having dismissed St Peters for 95 but on a very slow outfield, with drizzle throughout, the pressure of the chase proved too much and were bowled out for 78.

Last Friday also saw our age championships in swimming. The heavily contested meet, the last chance to impress for AIC selection, was a good indicator of the strength and depth of our program. Well done to all the boys who swam on the night and good luck to the team for the upcoming AIC championships at Chandler next Tuesday. Thank you to Mr James Boyce for your leadership and organisation of the event and the program overall.

This weekend sees our senior teams at home against St Patricks College

Reminder for Spectators

Remember that the boys participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants.

This is a GAME!

The referees are human (and often volunteers).

Remember that young people learn best by example.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game.

Communication

We use the College app to share all key operational information including team lists, weekly draws, training schedules, contact details, season calendar, the handbook and selection criteria. Draws and team lists are posted on the app as soon as practically possible each week.

The College Newsletter includes a summary of the previous week, key information for the wider school community, including match reports and highlights.

Volleyball

Mr Patrick Denkes (Volleyball Coordinator)

On a hot, February Saturday, Marist College took on St Peter’s in an exciting round of Volleyball. It was hearting to see Marist teams bounce back after a tough previous week. There was plenty of action and exciting performances.

Congratulations to the 8D’s and 11A’s on getting their first win of the season. I know with all the hard work both teams are putting in that there will be plenty more to come.  Well done as well to the 7B’s and Mrs Elizabeth Valor on hanging on to win a nail biter in the third. There was nothing close however about the third set for the 2nd’s, who kicked into gear and dominated to bring home another win.

Unfortunately, the 1st VI went agonisingly close to another win. Whilst they fought valiantly, they were unsuccessful in breaking down a spirited St Peter’s team in the 5th set. I know there are good results around the corner for the team. Keep your heads up.

With three rounds to go it is important that all teams are continuing to train hard. Please make sure you let your coach know if you are unable to train or play. Marist Volleyball is hunting a strong finish to the season, and it starts with the work put in at training.

This weekend is a home round against St Patrick’s College. I encourage everyone to make it to the Champagne Centre for the 1st VI at 12:30pm. It promises to be an exciting match and our team needs your support.

1st VI by Oliver Betts

In an eagerly anticipated clash in Round 4 of AIC volleyball, the Ashgrove 1st VI and St. Peters delivered a thrilling contest that had spectators on the edge of their seats. The match was a seesaw battle, with both teams displaying incredible skill and determination. Despite a valiant effort from Marist, St. Peters emerged victorious with a narrow 3 sets to 2 win.

The game was marked by intense rallies and dramatic moments, showcasing the competitive spirit of the AIC volleyball competition. I would like to make a special mention to Louie Di Lucchio, who stepped up for his second week in a row to represent the starting VI and played exceptionally.

Though disappointed with the result, the 1st VI can take pride in their strong performance and look ahead to future challenges with confidence. It would be great to see as many boys at our Round 5 home game against St. Pats this Saturday at 12:30pm.

Cricket

Mr Derek Lennon (Cricket Coordinator)

Last Saturday saw Marist and St Peters come together to recognise and raise funds for the Jane McGrath Foundation through their Pink Stumps Day initiative. This is the third time our two schools have participated in this great cause. Thank you to the Marist cricket community for your support.

It was another day of drizzle and showers though we did manage to complete most matches, with the afternoon games being the most affected. Overall, despite losing the firsts, it was a very strong day for Marist teams. A number of those were tight affairs, with courage and skill in equal measure. The highlight of the day was the bowling performance of Tom Clapham who took the remarkable figures of 7 wickets for 4 runs from his 4 overs.

This weekend we face St Patricks College who will no doubt give us a stern test. All teams must maintain their focus as we head to the final few weeks of the season with everything on the line to play for in the 1sts, many of our individual teams and also the AIC aggregate competition.

Good luck to all boys this weekend.

1st XI Report by Louis Morris

In a gripping cricket encounter between Marist and St Peter's on a rainy day, Marist won the toss and opted to bowl first. Joey Laner and Louis Morris showcased their bowling prowess by claiming two wickets each early on, while the highlight of the day was Will Easter taking his maiden wicket for Marist Firsts. However, it was only a prelude to an outstanding performance, as Easter went on to secure a remarkable five-wicket haul, demonstrating his bowling prowess on a challenging day. As Marist took to the crease in pursuit of the target, batting proved to be an uphill battle.

The opposition bowlers presented a formidable challenge, making scoring difficult for Marist throughout the innings. Despite determined efforts from the batting lineup, Marist fell agonisingly short of the required total, concluding the game 17 runs adrift.

Rugby Ready Program | Year 5-12

The Rugby Ready Program had an excellent kick-off. Thanks to all the students who attended Week 1 of the program. I cannot speak more highly of the manner in which each year level embraced the sessions, moved through the content, and connected with their peers.

Please NOTE, that if a student does miss a session, please attend another session that week either a year level up or down eg. Year 8 can attend Year 7 or Year 9. Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and expertise to the program. Marist is fortunate to have many staff, old boys and current students contributing to the rugby program. We appreciate all that they do in creating a safe and challenging rugby environment.

NOTE – Any student competing for a position on the AIC Marist swim team, you will start your Rugby Ready Program in Week 7 following the AIC Swimming Championship. A schedule will be made available closer to the time.

Swimming

AIC Swimming Championships Countdown

As we edge closer to the highly anticipated AIC Swimming Championships, the excitement and tension at our College pool is palpable. With just seven days left until the big event, our swimmers are gearing up for their moment to shine.

Reflecting on the recent College Age Championships held last Friday, it's evident that our team is firing on all cylinders. The pool witnessed an impressive display of skill and determination, with many of our athletes achieving personal best times for the season. Special recognition goes to Daniel Sadimenko from Year 5, crowned as the Prince of the Pool, and Archer Mellifont from Year 10, earning the distinguished title of King of the Pool.

However, amidst the triumphs, there's also the reality of tough decisions. Yesterday, our AIC Swimming Squad was unveiled, marking both moments of jubilation and disappointment. As a coach, it's always a mix of emotions, celebrating the successes while also empathising with those who didn't make the cut this year. To those who fell short, know that your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed. Keep your spirits high, for your opportunity is closer than you think. With perseverance and determination, your moment in the spotlight will come.

For the fortunate members who clinched a spot on the squad, congratulations are in order. However, the celebrations must be brief, for our ultimate challenge lies ahead. St. Peter's Lutheran College stands as a formidable opponent, eyeing their eighth consecutive AIC Championship. The road to victory won't be easy, but with teamwork, dedication, and relentless effort, we stand poised to make our mark.

As we countdown the days to the AIC Swimming Championships, let us rally together as a team, united in our pursuit of performance. Let's make our college proud and leave it all in the pool.

Greetings tennis enthusiasts!

Welcome to the latest scoop in the world of tennis, where the racquets are loud, the balls are faster, and the news is served fresh.

First things first, hold on to your tennis hats because we've got some court drama coming your way! Starting March 25th, our courts are getting a makeover. Picture this: resurfacing magic happening, but hey, we can't control the weather, so we might be at the mercy of raindrops.

Our goal? To have these courts serving aces again by the end of the holidays and ready for the grand slam that is Term 2.

Apologies in advance to our members for the three weeks of tennis withdrawal, but trust us, the wait will be worth it. Your patience will be rewarded with a tennis haven that shines brighter than a freshly polished trophy.

Now, brace yourselves because there won't be any tennis clinics during this court transformation. We can't promise you court time, but we can promise you a revamped tennis paradise to strut your stuff on post-holidays.
