Beginning of the Year Testing

The beginning of the year is an exciting time for teachers and children as they get to know each other. Over the last few weeks the children at Trinity have been working hard to complete beginning of the year assesments so that teachers get to know the students and their learning needs. Teachers then sit with learning leaders and their year level teacher teams to have 'data conversations' to plan future learning for the children at their point of need.

Home Reading and Home Learning

Over the last few weeks Home Learning and Home Reading have now commenced with all children encouraged to participate. The Home Learning and Home Reading consolidates the learning that happens in the classroom each day. It keep parents informed about classroom learning and helps to monitor your child's progress.

By now, students will have brought home a levelled reader or lexiled book as part of their Home Reading. Students are encouraged to read at home every day. For younger students, it is ideal if children can read with an adult family member. Books that are taken home are always at a slightly easier reading level than the level that students work on at school. This is so that home reading is not tedious or stressful for students at home. Home reading should be an enjoyable learning experience, an opportunity to enjoy reading at home together, as well as practising skills at home that have been learnt at school. Older students may take home a Lexile book from the library as part of their home reading. Sometimes these books have a comprehension quiz that students are required to complete. Children will also have the opportunity to borrow books of their choice from the School Library. Class teachers will help students select books that are suitable to their reading needs and interests.

As part of Home Learning, children will also be encouraged to complete learning activities across the week at home. These activities will be related to the learning that is happening at school. These activities may include a Numeracy activity, Little Learners Love Literacy or SMART Spelling, Reading or Writing activity, a Religious Education or Inquiry activity, or a Family Engagement Activity, which encourages families to engage with their child/children in their home learning.

For more information about Home Learning or Home Reading please chat with your child's teacher or myself.

NAPLAN 2024

In the coming weeks the students in Years 3 and 5 will have the opportunity to participate in NAPLAN.  NAPLAN is a National Literacy and Numeracy assessment that students undertake across the country. NAPLAN assesses the students essential skills in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy.

Students at Trinity are involved in many ongoing assessments which inform teachers as to what students know and what they need to learn next. NAPLAN is just one way that students' learning and progress is assessed. NAPLAN allows parents and carers to see how their child is performing over time and against the national standards.

This year the NAPLAN tests will all be held online, except for the Year 3 Writing Test which is still a pen and paper test. One of the main benefits in moving to an online test is that the tests are 'adaptive' which means the questions can become increasingly more challenging, or easier, depending on the students responses during the test.

Students do not need to study for NAPLAN. We know that for some students NAPLAN can cause some anxiety, however we will do everything at school to reassure students that NAPLAN is just part of their school program. They will be encouraged just to do their best. At school students will be given the opportunity to access practice tests and we will spend time working through the kinds of questions, problems and writing tasks that they might experience.

There are some students who may require some adjustments when completing the NAPLAN tests. Over the next week Helen our Learning Diversity Leader will be making contact with some families regarding additonal support for some students.

For more information about NAPLAN please see the link below and feel free to chat with your child's teacher or myself if you have any questions or concerns.
