Literacy Helpers Course

held Tuesday 27th February, 2024

Thank you to those who were able to join us in the staff room last Tuesday morning for our first Literacy Helpers training for 2024.  We had a large group of parents and grandparents keen to help out in our Foundation and Year 1 classrooms, and we look forward to this program launching soon.

We will run a final Literacy Helpers course for 2024 early in Term 2 for any other families who are keen to assist in their child’s classroom but were unable to attend last Tuesday morning.

Developing reading Fluency

As part of our Literacy Helpers course, we discussed the value of repeated reading to build reading fluency skills.

Fluent reading occurs when readers are able to read books at a ‘speaking rate’, without pauses to work out challenging words.  Fluent reading also uses punctuation to guide reading pace, and expression.

Once a child can read a book or passage fluently, they are more able to understand what they have read.  Repeated reading of short books enables young children to do this, and also allows older children to deepen their understanding of reading passages.
