🌿 WEEK FIVE LEARNING

🌱 LITERACY

In Reading this week, students will be delving into the world of persuasive texts, analysing and unpacking persuasive techniques, strength of word choice and text structure. They will be reading, watching and listening to persuasive writing and will participate in Guided Reading sessions focussed on discussing the strength and quality of persuasive texts at their level.

The persuasive theme will continue in Writing, with students building strong persuasive arguments that follow the P.E.E.L (Point, Evidence, Explain, Link) structure. They will participate in informal debates, share opinions centred around their interests and will have the opportunity to speak and write on changes they wish to make in their world. A focus will be placed on utilising the persuasive techniques such as emotive language, discussed through reading.

What you can do at home

Help your child to set aside time to read - preferably every night. This will help them build important learning habits. You may also want to discuss what they are reading with them. You might like to read about current events on kidsnews.com.au and ask your child to share their opinions about the topic.

🌱 NUMERACY

GRADE 5s

In Maths this week, Grade 5s will be revisiting the areas of measurement and geometry such as:

- 12 and 24 hour time

- Calendars

- Mapping

- Capacity, mass and volume

They will have opportunities to expand their understanding of associated vocabulary and problem solving strategies.

GRADE 6s

Grade 6 students will revise their understanding of decimal place value by ordering, comparing and renaming decimal numbers. This will enable them to use place value to solve problems involving the four operations and decimals.

What you can do at home

Discuss the importance of slowing down to understand the problem at hand. It may be the language that gives clues about how to solve the problem or it could be a multi-step problem. This will assist in your child understanding which formula to use to find an answer.

🌱HOMEWORK

Encourage your child to log onto Mathletics and explore activities related to:

Grade 5 - Measurement and Geometry

Grade 6 - Place value and decimals

When 2024 Mathletics classes have been set up by our computer technician, Mathletics will become a weekly homework task, set by the classroom teacher.
