WEEK 5 LEARNING IN...

📚ENGLISH

This week in Reading we will be noticing that when we make connections to what we are reading we understand more deeply the concepts presented in the text. When we make connections we bring background knowledge to our understanding of what we are reading.

In Writing we will continue to focus on description, noticing how word choice helps the author establish clear ideas and a strong voice. We will also continue to focus on accurate sentence structures, such as when to use capital letters and full stops.

For Phonics this week we will focus on the sound 'short a', as in cat. You can hear this sound in the middle of words such as 'cat', 'that' and 'crash'. We will consider rhyming and word building, following cvc/ccvc/cvcc/cccvcc word patterns to help our thinking.

What you can do at home

Ask your child if they know what 'cvc' word patterns are. When we look at this pattern in words we notice the pattern- C (consonant) V (vowel) and C (consonant), for example, cat, mat, hat, rat. With your child, build a list of words that follow the same pattern and discuss the rhymes that the words make.

🎲 MATHEMATICS

We will continue thinking about number patterns. Knowing how to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s is useful when counting large collections-this makes counting efficient!

Not only will we increase our counting patterns (counting forward), but will will also notice counting patterns decreasing (counting backwards).

What you can do at home

This year is a leap year. Discuss what this means with your child. You may also like to discuss the fours counting pattern and how it is associated with leap years!

CBL-Community

We are currently building an understanding of the following question,

'What communities do I belong to?'. Unpacking this will help students  to think about what people must contribute in order to belong to a community.

🌟 REMINDERS

We will be working through our iPad agreement process this week. Your child will be able to bring their iPad to school once this process is complete. Please check your child's blue book pocket for a copy of their iPad licence. Once this document comes home, your child may bring their fully charged iPad to school every day. To help ensure your child's iPad is ready to use at school, please log on to Sentral (on a laptop or desktop computer) to complete the Mosyle Device Management (MDM) permission. This will ensure your child has access to wifi at school.

Please ensure your child brings their 'Take Home Book Pocket' to school every day. Help your child by reminding them to pack it in their school bag as soon as they have finished reading at home. This will help with setting a good daily habit, making things easier in the long run!
