Year 10 Girls Building Their Futures with VET Construction
Each week, five dedicated Year 10 girls travel to Guilford Young College Glenorchy to take part in the VET Construction program. This hands-on opportunity allows them to develop valuable skills in an industry that is traditionally male-dominated.
What is Construction?
VET Construction covers a wide range of skills needed for the building and construction industry, including using tools and equipment, reading plans, measuring materials, and following worksite safety procedures. Students also develop teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.
We are incredibly proud of their commitment and look forward to seeing where this opportunity takes them.

Secondary Debating
The Tasmanian Debating Union Secondary Schools Competition is underway, and Mount Carmel has twenty-one enthusiastic debaters taking part. Our Year 8, Year 9, and Year 10 teams have started the season with energy, tackling the complex issue of artificial intelligence in Round 1.
The Year 10 team secured a strong first win, demonstrating the advanced debating skills of Points of Information and Reply Speeches for the first time. Meanwhile, the Year 8 team won by forfeit, unfortunately missing the opportunity to argue their case against a world without artificial intelligence. The Year 9 Team presented a compelling argument in favour of having all schoolwork marked by AI but were narrowly defeated by a well-argued opposition from Hutchins.
The commitment and teamwork of all our debaters are evident, and the season promises to be filled with lively, engaging, and well-fought debates. A special thanks to Mrs Jetson and Mrs. Burke for their invaluable coaching and support.
Yr 9/10 Dance Elective
Our Yr 9/10 Dance Elective class has started learning their commercial jazz routine for the Gold Coast Eisteddfod with local and guest artist Johan Manurung.
The students will be travelling to Queensland in August to compete at this national event.
