EISM Division 1 Swimming

Emily Townend, Head of PE

We are so proud of our students for their effort, enthusiasm and reflection of Christian character at EISM Swimming at MSAC recently. It was wonderful to see our students cheer each other on, and fill events last minute to support the team.

As a school, we finished 6th overall in Division 1, and equal 3rd in the Overall Boys Aggregate which is an excellent achievement!

(A complete list of students who received a place in their events is at the end of the article)

As a school, we continue to compete with a willingness to do our best and reflect our God-given talents. Our results and performances in Division 1 are a credit to the students’ hard work, and willingness to learn in our before-school swimming trainings.

Reflections from Sports Captains, Flynn Wills and Charity Onley

EISM swimming on Monday was so much fun to be a part of! It was amazing to see everyone swimming on the day and getting involved! We were particularly impressed at how everyone encouraged one other and showed humility throughout the day. It was awesome to see everyone who wasn’t in the pool supporting their peers and building positive culture around our school. We are really happy with the results from the day and want to congratulate all the swimmers who placed on the podium, as well as everyone who got in the pool and gave it their best

Medieval Day

Eleanor Ng, Chelsea Chan & Karen Huang, Year 8 Students

DCC’s Medieval Day incursion was an unforgettable experience that transported our Year 8 students all the way back to medieval Europe. Experts visited our school to bring the Middle Ages to life, guiding us through the Age of Chivalry (weapons and armor), medieval costumes and lifestyle, games, music, and dance.

During this experience we got hands-on with some seriously cool weapons and shields, learning about their history and uses. The highlight was trying on medieval armor, which was literally like carrying 25-30kg of metal - moving around in a heavy metal suit is very challenging!

Did you know chainmail was also extremely tedious to make and expensive to buy? We enjoyed participating in fencing matches with foam swords - it truly felt like we were knights in training!

We learned about medieval costumes and lifestyle, discovering how different social classes dressed. Nobles and kings often wore extra fabric and extremely peculiar looking long shoes to symbolize wealth. A surprising fact was that merchants were often richer than nobles!

We played some classic medieval games such as Kubb and Catch a Dragon's Tail, which are still enjoyed today. Competing with friends made the experience even more fun and connected us to history in a hands-on way.

During the music and dance session we heard unique instruments like the hurdy-gurdy, gemshorn, and hunting whistle. We even tried dancing to medieval tunes!

This incursion made history jump off the page, creating memories we won’t forget.

Pi Day

Trevor Carter, Head of Mathematics

On Friday 14 March (3.14 in US date nomenclature), the world celebrated Pi Day.

This year at DCC, the STEM captains coordinated with the Maths Faculty to run several events to celebrate the infinite number Pi:  π

Students competed in Home Groups for the Pi Day Kahoot championship with Mrs Peel’s 8A crowned the winners. At lunchtime, over 150 secondary students and teachers gathered in the middle of the oval to create a human π symbol, where a drone captured a photo of us.

Participants then lined up to cool off from the hot weather and enjoy a Zooper Dooper, with some entering the competition to recite PI to the most digits. McDonalds ‘apple pi’ was the sweet reward for the winners!

Congratulations to all students who memorized and recited pi, with special mention to Joel Taylor of Year 12 who recited pi to over 200 decimal places!!

Other winners for their respective year levels were Charlotte Becker (Year 7), Elsa Chew (Year 8), Emma Caulfield (Year 10) and Annie Madzikanda (Year 11).

Pi Day coincides with the birthdate of Albert Einstein, so a themed Escape Room was set-up as a laboratory experiment gone wrong. The K-block was transformed into ‘Pi-block’ and a room was set up first as a bakery with lots of pies being made, then transformed into Einstein’s laboratory. This was planned and executed with great creativity by a group of students in a STEM team and led by our STEM captains Tobias Lau and Rebecca Park.

Groups of 4 – 6 students used creativity, teamwork, maths prowess, Pi and problem-solving skills to solve clues. The answers to these puzzles revealed a 4-digit code to a safe containing a key. This key then enabled students to unlock the door to a second room, where after solving more clues, they found a password which when entered into a laptop, gave them the combination of a lock that provided the final escape! The prizes on offer provided an excellent incentive too!

To enable more students to have a turn in the Escape Room, we ran this activity through recess, lunch and after school for two days. Over 50 students had a turn at solving the puzzles, well done to those who escaped!

Thank you to all students and staff who participated in these events and congratulations to our STEM team led by Tobias Lau (Year 12) and Rebecca Park (Year 11).
