Careers and Transition
Goals + Knowledge + Skills = Success
It is hard to believe that we are half way through Term 2 already. We have been extremely busy with a number of students involved in a wide range of training courses, TAFE courses, work experience placements and events that have been happening in the careers space.
After a few technical issues we are happy to announce that the Careers and Transition Facebook page is back up and running. This page provides Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 parents, carers and students information about upcoming careers events, programs, job vacancies and showcases the amazing achievement of our FGHS students. If you have a child in Year 10, 11 or 12, please use the QR code below to join this group.
Stage 6 Subject Selection
As Year 10 students begin planning for their senior years of schooling, we are entering a crucial phase — the Stage 6 Subject Selection process. This period plays a significant role in shaping students' academic pathways and aligning their school experiences with their future study, training, and career aspirations.
The roadmap below outlines important dates for subject selection. An email has also been sent to all Year 10 parents containing more information. We are here to support every student and family through this important process. If you have any questions at any stage, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Career Events
Work Experience
We had many students engaging in work experience this term in a vareity of occupations. Thank you to the businesses that continue to support our students through hosting them for work experience placements.
University Roadshow
We were lucky enough to host the University Roadshow again this year. This engaging and informative session provided students with valuable information about their options for university. They received an insider’s look at pathways to university, university life and study options with representatives of four universities: Charles Sturt University, University of New England, Southern Cross University, and the University of Newcastle.
University of Newcastle Unisteps Program - Alumni Lunch
At the end of Term 2 we hosted a University of Newcastle (UoN) Alumni Lunch as part of the UNISTEPS program. Year 11 and Year 12 students who are interested in attending UON were invited to attend. Students and UoN Alumni enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Ms Bryson and the Year 10 Food Technology students. The event allowed students to mingle with the various alumni and speak to them about their career paths and experiences studying at UON.
Hospitality Immersion Program - A Taste of Hospitality
Educational Pathways Program provided a group of Year 10 students the opportunity to learn about the many career opportunities available in the Hospitality industry. Local Chef Brett Pepper spoke about his extensive career path and gave a cooking demonstration.
Students then worked in pairs to create the meal, which was then eagerly judged by Ms Walsh, Mrs Middleton and Mr Crook. All the meals presented outstandingly well, and all tasted delicious! The students showed great teamwork, communication and self management skills.
Healthcare Immersion Program
Through the Educational Pathways Program (EPP) our students had an incredible experience at the SBAT Health Services Assistant Awareness Day at The University of Newcastle Central Coast Clinical School in Gosford.
They explored exciting career pathways in healthcare, gained valuable insights from industry professionals, and even got hands-on experience during the hospital tour and practical activities.
From learning about Hunter New England Health career opportunities to discovering the nursing study pathway and understanding the SBAT Health Services Assistant role, this day was packed with inspiration and knowledge.
Maitland Career Expo
On Friday 19th May we took 90 students to the Career Expo at Maitland Basketball Stadium. Students had a fantastic opportunity to connect with 100+ businesses and tertiary educators, exploring future career pathways and gaining valuable insights.
First Aid Training
On Wednesday May 14 we had 19 students successfully complete their First Aid Certificates.
SBAT Student Spotlight - Alison Silva
Proud Indigenous student Alison Silva is making her mark in the health industry through a School-Based Traineeship in Certificate III in Hospital or Health Services Pharmacy Support with Hunter New England Health at the John Hunter Hospital.
I recently sat down with Alison to ask her some questions about her SBAT.
Why did you choose to do an SBAT? It was important to me to stay in school and complete my HSC, but I also wanted to complete a qualification that could assist me into a career post-school.
What's the best thing about doing an SBAT? I like that I am getting trained in something I really enjoy doing. I like the balance of work and training 1 day per week, plus still being involved at school and having time to complete my study.
What is the best part of your job? I like how everyday seems different. I am learning something new on each shift. My day is always interesting and I am never bored!
What skills have you learnt in the workplace? My communication skills have been growing from strength to strength. I am learning about the different medications and terminology used in the medical field and my confidence is improving with every shift.
What advice would you give any students who are thinking about doing an SBAT? I would definitely encourage other students to complete an SBAT, especially if it is in an industry that they really enjoy. Excellent time management skills are required because it is really important to stay on top of your school work.
Alison is an exceptional student with a very bright future ahead of her. She has been wonderfully supported by the staff at Francis Greenway High School who will continue to support her throughout her SBAT.
It has been a busy term so far and the CAT Team look forward to providing more opportunities to the students. Check the Facebook page or have your child check their Microsoft Teams page in the Careers Channel for courses and training opportunities that will be provided throughout the remainder of Term 2 and into Term 3.
Thank You
