At the end of Term 1, some of our Support Students were chosen to exhibit their artworks in Maitland as part of Youth Week. These students worked very hard, including drafting and persisting with challenges in their works to create a resolved product. Our students were selected from a large amount of entries. We are extremely proud - well done!!
We were fortunate enough to begin Term 2 with our own Athletics Carnival day, where students participated respectfully in a variety of novelty events that still engaged in physical activity. All students showed excellent team work skills and initiative throughout the day, most notably during the Scavenger Hunt and Dress-Up Relay. Thanks so much to the staff involved in the organisation to create a fun day for all!
Earlier this Term, our Senior students had the opportunity to head to the Hunter Disability Expo at Newcastle Entertainment Centre. The event showcased a wide range of services, supports, and opportunities available for people with disability and their families. Students explored interactive displays and gathered information from local organisations. They also interacted with a furry friend or two!! It was a valuable and empowering experience that helped students build confidence, expand their knowledge, and connect with the community. All students who attended demonstrated exemplary behaviour on the day.
A group of our talented students proudly represented the school at the State Boccia Competition in Maitland on Wednesday, 14th May, where our first round was held. Students earned their place on the school team through a series of competitive try-outs, and showed exceptional commitment, teamwork, and skill throughout the event.
Our team consisted of Dakota Stanik-Team Manager, Nate Porter-Fortune-Team Coach, Noah Lowe-Equipment Coordinator and Hamish McCall, Macey Neilsen, Brody Hackett and Jessiah Dooley as players.
On the day, our FGHS team demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, drawing or winning all of their games against tough opponents. Their determination and team spirit were evident in every match. While they narrowly missed out on the top spot, finishing third overall, we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and the way they represented our school!
Congratulations to all team members for their hard work and impressive performance!
Students from S3 and S6 recently visited the FrogID touring exhibition at Stockland Green Hills. The interactive exhibition tied in with their HSIE and Science studies, where students have been learning about frogs, their ecosystems, and how to protect them.
As part of their project, students have also been planning and building a frog hotel back at school to provide a safe habitat for local frog species. The excursion offered valuable hands-on learning experiences through engaging displays, dioramas, and interactive exhibits about native frog species and their habitats. Staff were extremely proud of the students, who demonstrated outstanding behaviour and represented the school with pride throughout the day.
Students from S3 and S6 classes had a wonderful excursion to the Newcastle Museum. Students caught the train to and from Newcastle, showing excellent behaviour and respect while using public transport. This was mentioned by several members of the community — a big congratulations to all of them!
At the museum, students explored the "A Newcastle Story" exhibition, learning about the urbanisation of Newcastle and how the city has changed over time. They discovered more about the history of the Newcastle area and the important role it has played in shaping the region.
Students were able to attend the "Fire and Earth" exhibition to experience the heat, danger and hard work of the BHP steel production. Students also engaged in the "Supernova" exhibition, gaining hands-on experience in the Science Centre. It was a fantastic day of learning, and we are very proud of how engaged, respectful, and curious our students were throughout the excursion. Well done, S3 and S6!
Our students across all classes have been engaged in a range of projects, from cooking scrumptiously good treats and meals, to celebrating Children's Day in Japanese, exploring out and about in the community, and working hard in the cultural garden. To build social connections and collaboration, all Support classes have regularly engaged in Friday activities, where students have showed teamwork and initiative. Keep up the great work everyone!!
