"I am among those who think that science has great beauty"  ― Marie Curie

Term 2 is a busy term for the Science faculty. We are coming into the home stretch for the first semester and the next round of assessments will be soon due for most years.

Earlier this term, Mr Vardeh and Mr Whitton took the 7P Science class to Newcastle University for the Build Me a Future enrichment day. Students were introduced to a variety of scientific and engineering challenges that they needed to use logic and critical thinking skills to solve. Challenges such as designing a lightweight bridge out of limited materials that will hold the most weight encourage students to test themselves and stretch the limits of their abilities. As you can see from the photos, all the students had a great time and hopefully learnt something about science, engineering and most importantly, themselves.

Year 7 Science have also been studying matter this term. They have learnt that all matter, even gas, is made up of particles. They have also used models to represent complex concepts, to make them easier to understand. In the photos below, we can see some of the students in the 7S class showing off their models of the particle arrangement in solids, liquids and gases.

Science Week is coming up next term and we are currently running our Science Week T-Shirt design competition. Students from all years are invited to design a T-shirt based around the Science Week theme, Decoding the Universe - Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language. The winning design will be chosen from the submissions received.

So time to get creative! Science teachers will wear the shirt with the winning design and the student who designed the shirt will receive one of their own that they can wear to school as uniform! A great prize. After all, who wouldn’t want to look like their Science teacher?

Until next time!

Thank You
