Year 5/6 News

READING
Students have focused on the 'visualising' strategy and learned how to identify key themes within texts to assist their comprehension when reading. We completed our modelled reading text 'Black Cockatoo' and have started to read the sequel 'Dirrarn'. Students will continue to explore the author's purpose and make connections between these two texts through a variety of reading response tasks. Students have also continued to focus on their individual reading goal and have worked in small groups to explore a range of comprehension and vocabulary strategies.
WRITING
Students have been exploring the features and components of procedural texts during the planning and construction of their mousetrap. The aim of this project is to design and construct a mousetrap that can humanely catch a mouse or even better, several mice. Students were able to demonstrate their knowledge of procedural texts by creating a Google slide presentation, highlighting their aim, materials and detailed steps required for the construction of their mousetrap.
They also learned about using a rubric to ensure their presentation meets the expected criteria and ways in which they could make improvements to their work.
Here are some of the awesome mousetraps and works in progress!
MATHS
Students have investigated the formulas and strategies for finding the area and perimeter of regular, irregular and composite shapes. They have also explored how to convert between units of measurement. Students continued to develop their fluency and accuracy of multiplication facts. Some groups have also explored the connection between multiplication and division.
