In English, we’ve begun reading our new class novel Yirra and Her Deadly Dog Demon. Students are loving reading about Demon’s mischievous antics and Yirra’s everyday life. Yirra is an Indigenous Australian child, and the book touches on her culture and background. This has beautifully connected with our writing unit, where students are creating factual recounts about the history and significance of the Aboriginal flag.
In Maths, we’ve been learning to select appropriate units of measurement and to estimate and check measurements with accuracy. One of the highlights was testing our paper plane throwing skills—we measured how far we could throw in metres and centimetres. We also enjoyed the World of Maths incursion, where students tackled hands-on challenges, showing impressive teamwork, problem-solving skills, and resilience.
In General Studies, we’ve been exploring different commemorations and celebrations from around the world and within Australia. So far, we’ve learned about ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, Australia Day, Sorry Day, Diwali, and Holi. Students have enjoyed making connections between these events and gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures and histories.
It’s been a joyful and busy start to the term, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of Term 2 brings!
