Grade 1 News

Hello Grade One families!
Welcome back to Term 2! We are so excited to have the students back in our classrooms! We hope you had a lovely break. Students across the cohort have settled back into their classrooms beautifully, and are ready for another term of learning.
Below are what the students have been working on:
English
During our English lessons this Term, students have focused on revising previously learnt sounds and have been introduced to new sounds including the following: /ow/ /oi/ /ir/. We are beginning to look at split digraphs, students have been introduced to the following: /a_e/ like in the word wave or cake.
Each lesson, students practice their formation of letters, write words that include the new sound, write sentences, engage in fluency reading and storytelling.
This term we have introduced a new component to our English lessons, where students take part in retelling, innovating and creating stories in a fun and engaging way. We have been retelling the story of The Gruffalo.
Core Knowledge / Literature
This term, we have been learning about ANZAC Day through a variety of stories including Anzac Ted and Anzac Billy. Students have been learning about the significance of this Day and what it means for Australia.
Students have begun learning about the different explorers who discovered Australia.
Maths
This term, the year one students have been working on revising their knowledge of addition and subtraction and being able to use a variety of strategies to help them when solving problems. Students have been introduced to a new strategy ‘bridging’ where they are required to make a group of 10. This strategy allows students to solve addition problems to 20 in a more efficient way.
