Evacuation Drill Practice Today – Offsite Evacuation

Each term, we practise an evacuation drill to help ensure our students and staff are well prepared in the event of an emergency. Today, we conducted our Term 2 drill—an offsite evacuation to Royal Park, under the scenario of a pretend gas leak.

These drills are important learning opportunities. They help students understand what to do in different types of emergencies and allow us to review and refine our processes. We were really impressed with how calmly and responsibly our students' followed instructions throughout the evacuation.

Well done everyone!

National Road Safety Week: 11–18 May 2025

This week is National Road Safety Week, a time for all Australians to pause and reflect on how we can contribute to safer roads for everyone. This important week, running from May 11 to 18, encourages all road users to make safe choices, remember lives lost on our roads, and support those impacted by road trauma.

At Buninyong Primary School, road safety is something we talk about often. Whether it’s slowing down near school crossings, sticking to the 40km/h speed limit in school zones, or parking safely during drop-off and pick-up - we’re always encouraging families to help keep our students safe.

We also know that many of our older students are starting to use bikes, e-scooters and e-bikes. That’s why we’ve included a Youth Road Safety Fact Sheet below. It outlines key rules and safety tips for a range of transport options young people might be using—some of which come with important legal restrictions that families may not be aware of.

Some important points:

  • E-scooters must not be ridden by anyone under 16 and cannot be used on footpaths.
  • Helmets are mandatory on all bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters.
  • Modified or petrol-powered bicycles are not legal for use.
  • E-bikes must not exceed 25km/h and cannot carry passengers.

Please take a moment to read through the fact sheet and have a conversation at home about safe and responsible road use.

Safe to School – Road Safety Project

In partnership with Road Safe Central Highlands – Term 2, 2025

This term, we’re proud to be partnering with Road Safe Central Highlands on a project called Safe to School. The aim is to improve safety around our school and support families in making active travel (walking, riding, scooting) a safe and realistic option.

parent survey has been sent out via Compass. Thank you to those who have already completed it - your feedback is vital in helping us identify the key concerns around traffic, parking, and safety near the school gates.

Students in older grades will also be completing a short survey in class.

This project involves:

  • Gathering feedback from parents, students, and staff
  • Working with local councils and Regional Roads Victoria to explore possible improvements
  • Creating a practical action plan to support safer access to school

We’re looking forward to continuing this important work and appreciate your support in helping make the journey to school safer for everyone.

IDAHOBIT Day: International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia and Transphobia - May 17th

We are proud to recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of people and cultures in our school and aim to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, their families, staff and wider community.

We hope to continue contributing to building a more tolerant, respectful and understanding society and we encourage treating everyone with respect, fairness and compassion at all times.

We wish to acknowledge and show our support of the LGBTQI members of our school community. Through our words and actions, we can all make a difference.

Bunjil Student Awards

Congratulations to the following students who received a 5/6 Bunjil Award at last week’s assembly.

Bunjil awards recognise student achievement and those who display our school values of being respectful, responsible and kind.

Well done! All of our weekly winners enjoy a hot chocolate or zooper dooper with a principal.
