Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)

As we approach the middle of the term, we are beginning to notice student absences creeping up. We completely understand that children become unwell and, when they are sick, home is absolutely the best place for them to recover. However, regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in supporting your child's learning, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.
Every day at school provides opportunities for children to learn new skills, strengthen friendships, build confidence, and participate in wonderful learning experiences. Even missing just a few days throughout the year can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and maintain important social connections.
If your child is feeling worried about friendships, schoolwork, or assessments but is otherwise well, we encourage them to come to school. Often, attending with the support of trusted staff can help reduce these worries, while staying home may unintentionally make returning to school feel even more challenging.
The Victorian Department of Education identifies the following attendance ranges:
0–6 days absent (90–100% attendance)
Students are attending regularly and are well placed to benefit from their learning.
7–10 days absent (80–90% attendance)
Attendance is below the expected level and can begin to impact learning over time.
11–20 days absent (70–80% attendance)
Learning gaps can become significant, making it harder for students to achieve their potential.
More than 20 days absent (below 70% attendance)
This is considered chronic absenteeism and can have a substantial impact on a child's education and wellbeing.
If your family is experiencing challenges that are making school attendance difficult, please know that you are not alone. Whether it's anxiety, health concerns, family circumstances, or something else entirely, we are here to support you. Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher or a member of our Wellbeing Team so we can work together to find the best way forward.
If your child is unable to attend school, please remember to notify us as soon as possible by submitting an absence through Compass or by contacting the school office on
(03) 9716 2140.
* Keep an eye out for next week's newsletter! We'll be including a simple step-by-step guide showing families how to enter student absences through Compass, making it even easier to keep us informed.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Every day really does count, and together we can help every child to reach their full potential!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.
