Adressing Maths Anxiety & Building Confidence
Mathematics learning develops over time, with early skills forming the foundation for more complex ideas. Supporting children early helps build both their understanding and their confidence. At school, we monitor student progress to identify any gaps and provide extra support where needed. This ensures every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Confidence is key in mathematics. It’s a common myth that some people are simply “good at maths” and others are not, but all children can learn and improve with practice and encouragement.
At Whittlesea Primary School, we address this by helping our students reset through our Maths Mindsets. Our mindsets are displayed in classrooms, and teachers use these as a support to help students succeed in Maths.
Families play an important role by supporting maths learning at home through everyday activities like cooking, shopping, planning trips, or playing games. These experiences help children see maths in real life and build their confidence.
Interestingly, when we look at our most recent NAPLAN data, we can see our Numeracy data is really trending in the right direction, especially in relation to growth (value adding)
