Road Safety

Passenger safety – click, clack, front and back

Every day, thousands of children travel to and from school by car. Wearing a correctly fitted seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash.

Using the right restraint

Children must use a restraint that matches their age and size:

  • Younger children should be in an approved child car seat or booster seat
  • Children should remain in a booster seat until they are tall enough for an adult seatbelt to fit correctly (usually around 145 cm or 10–12 years old)
  • A correctly fitted seatbelt sits low across the hips and across the middle of the shoulder, not the neck or stomach.

Encourage families to use the five step test to check if their child is ready for an adult seatbelt.
