Wellbeing At McAuley

Beating the Winter Blues

As the colder weather continues it's not unusual for children (and adults) to feel a little more tired, less motivated or a bit down. Shorter days, chilly mornings and spending more time indoors can all affect our mood. These feelings are often referred to as the "winter blues" and are a normal part of the season.

There are lots of simple ways families can support children's wellbeing during winter:

  • Get outside each day – Even a short walk or time in the sunshine can help boost mood and energy.
  • Keep moving – Physical activity, whether it's riding a bike, dancing, playing sport, or kicking a ball in the backyard, helps our bodies and minds feel good.
  • Stick to routines – Regular bedtimes, healthy meals, and consistent morning routines help children feel secure and well-rested.
  • Stay connected – Spending quality time with family and friends, sharing a meal, playing a game, or simply chatting about the day can make a big difference.
  • Notice the positives – Encourage children to think of three good things that happened each day or keep a simple gratitude journal.
  • Take care of yourself – Reading a book, drawing, listening to music, practising deep breathing, or enjoying a quiet moment are all great ways to recharge.

If you notice your child seems unusually withdrawn, worried or sad for several weeks -  please don't hesitate to reach out. Working together, families and schools can ensure every child feels supported and connected.

Let's continue to look after one another this winter by spreading kindness, staying active, and finding joy in the little moments.
