At the beginning of Term 3, Karoo Primary School celebrated NAIDOC Week through our whole school ‘Deadly Doors’ project, exploring this year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly, and celebrating the achievements and contributions of Indigenous Australians.
Students from Foundation to Grade 6 explored Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, listened to music by Indigenous artists and researched an influential Indigenous Australian. Each class then created a colourful ‘Deadly Door’ celebrating their chosen individual, including Baker Boy, Albert Namatjira, Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Eddie Betts.
Students enjoyed gallery walks to learn about each door before voting for their favourite, with the winner announced at assembly next week.
The project was a wonderful way for our students to celebrate First Nations Australians, their culture and achievements, while recognising the importance of their stories.
