SCIENCE

by Julie Mullins

On Monday 12th February, a group of 15 Year 10-12 students had the opportunity to visit the  HMAS Dechaineux  SSG 76 submarine which was docked at the Port of Melbourne.  The group had the opportunity to:

  • look through and operate the periscope to see the city skyline and west gate bridge.
  • see the torpedoes and where they are loaded and fired from.
  • see the engines and learn about how the submarine uses them.
  • learn about the type of missions that specific submarine carries out e.g. stealth and reconnaissance.
  • learn about the different roles on the submarine and the daily life of the crew.
  • learn about the technology on board and the movement of the submarine.

This opportunity was an ADF careers event and two of the students in attendance had worked on a nuclear submarine challenge in 2023 in their Science class.  Thanks to Harvey Schlusser for the report and photograph.
