Visual Arts

Year 7 Visual Arts students have been studying the topic of Endangered Animals this term, looking at ways we can help spread awareness about animals in danger of extinction. Students have been researching, creating artworks and developing sculptures as a part of this unit of work. Everyone has worked so hard to build their sculptures and are now on the way to creating a short claymation animation design before the end of the term.

Year 8 students have been working on the concept of still life and creating works that tell the viewer something about themself. They made decisions about what to put in their still life, what to emphasise, colours that have meaning to them, and anything that tells their story. Students are also studying the patterned style of Howard Arkley, drawing inspiration from his suburban architectural designs. During the last couple of weeks of this term, students will complete a lino printing project that focuses on interesting urban architecture.

Year 9 have developed an understanding of how artists can use their platform to voice political concerns and power imbalance. Students have explored a range of artists and their use of various expressive forms.  Barbara Kruger and Ai Weiwei were just some of the artists investigated. Students then created their own body of work based on a selected issue. Students have done a terrific job in creating multiple artworks this term.

Year 10 students have been exploring implied movement and the human body this term. They have worked towards creating artworks which show some form of movement through repetition and other visual clues. Students have also been developing skills in writing about artists and artworks who also implement movement in their compositions.

Year 11 Visual Arts students are currently developing their minor Body of Work, exploring a range of ideas and concepts, and implementing material practice which complements their intention. Students have also been developing a deeper range of terminology, employing writing skills when learning about artists.

Year 11 Photography students have explored the filmmaking technique, stop motion, to create a short film. Students developed a storyboard and developed a main character using claymation techniques, created a background and implemented a small range of props in the making of the film. Students learned about how to sequence the movements and how many individual shots are required to create a 30-second film.

Year 12 Visual Arts students are well on the way to realising their Body of Work. It has been a fantastic journey with a wide range of artworks being developed. Year 12 Visual Arts and Design and Technology will be exhibiting their works in Week 1 of next term. This is a fabulous experience as students will receive feedback on the progress of their work so far. Students have also been exploring artists and their artworks and further developing their writing techniques in response to specific questions.

Year 12 Photography students have been very busy this term creating their own Body of Photographic works. Each student has focused on a different source of inspiration, ranging from Lego, sport, landscape and the elements of photography. This unit has helped students further develop skills in their practice, using a range of shot selection and camera settings.
