Information and Digital Technology
Information and Digital Technology, or IDT, is a returning course at Mater Dei and this year it returns with Mr Carroll at the helm.
What is IDT?
The Information and Digital Technology course provides a foundation in general computing and employment skills that enable participation in an information technology environment in any industry. The course provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in introductory ICT technical functions. It also assists students to achieve a degree of confidence and self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user.
Students in ICT have been developing their skills, exploring new technologies and applying their learning in creative and practical ways. We asked them a few questions about their experiences, and here are some of their responses.

I've enjoyed the class conversations and messing around with tech. We've covered customer interactions and hardware so far, and will go beyond that along with further in depth. It's been a more casual pace than some other classes and you get to see your skills being developed in real time.

Throughout this term we have been building PCs in class and I am currently looking at building or buying my own pc and this course has helped teach me know what parts to buy and how each part works and how to assembly the entire unit. Oliver Davidson

Learning how to build a PC has been great fun, learning all of the names and uses, their locations within the PC and how all the wiring connections actually work. Bosco Maran

I have really enjoyed building two new gaming PCs throughout Term 2. This has allowed me to build on my prior knowledge involving PCs, but also learn some expert things from Mr Carroll. I have really enjoyed completing this VET course and applying my practical skills. Jed Cox

One of the best things about this course is gaining a certificate that is recognised throughout all of Australia for what I am learning at school.

Manufacturing and Engineering
Our Manufacturing and Engineering students have been hard at work completing a variety of projects. Year 11 students have been working through the initial stages of their toolbox while Year 12 students have finished the painting of their toolboxes and have been working through the machining soft-faced hammer project.
Students were asked what they enjoyed about the subject and all of them replied with similar responses stating that they enjoyed learning new skills in the workshop that can be later used on a job-site, working with their hands and gaining confidence in developing projects, being out of a normal classroom setting.
Year 12 were asked about the projects they have been working on and what skills they have learnt;

I really enjoyed making the toolbox, as it was challenging but also fun. It was very cool to see it all come together. Tom Wichman

The hammer project was a highlight for me because it showed us how engineering and mathematics can work together. Henry Lewington

I have enjoyed creating the toolbox as we have learnt many new skills that will be used going forward in our trades of choice. Charlie O'Reilly

I enjoyed making the toolbox, it was very long to make but it came up very nice and something that I'll use in the long run. Charlie Buist
