European Music Tour

During the recent holidays, our Senior Music students embarked on an unforgettable two-week European Music Tour, travelling through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The tour provided a wonderful opportunity for students to perform internationally, immerse themselves in different cultures, and experience some of Europe’s most iconic landmarks and historical sites.
Our journey began in Paris, where students had the privilege of performing at the magnificent La Madeleine Church. While in the French capital, students explored many of the city’s famous attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum. We also enjoyed taking in the sights of Paris from a relaxing cruise along the River Seine before visiting the beautiful Sacré-Cœur Basilica and the charming artists’ square of Montmartre.
One of the most meaningful and memorable parts of the tour was our time in the Somme region of northern France. Students spent time reflecting at the École Victoria School and Museum, the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and the historic town of Pozières, learning about the significant sacrifices made by Australian soldiers during World War I. These visits provided a powerful educational experience, helping students gain a deeper understanding of Australia’s history and enduring connection to the region. We were especially proud of student Evie Williamson, who courageously performed the Last Post and Rouse on the steps of the Australian National Memorial.
We were also fortunate to reconnect with one of the College’s much-loved former teachers, Miss Doris Haddock, who shared a brief history lesson with our students in true Miss Haddock fashion.
Our performance at Pozières Church was warmly received by the local community, who generously hosted us afterwards with supper and refreshments. Belgium provided a picturesque backdrop for the next stage of our journey. Travelling through the charming towns of Bruges and Antwerp, students experienced the beauty and character of the Belgian countryside. The choir performed in Bruges, a city renowned for its medieval architecture, winding cobblestone streets and tranquil canals. In Brussels, students enjoyed a guided walking tour and visited the fascinating Musical Instruments Museum, where they explored a remarkable collection of instruments from around the world.
Amsterdam welcomed us with beautiful weather and many opportunities for discovery. Students visited the Anne Frank House, gaining valuable insight into an important chapter of European history. We also explored the historic village of Zaanse Schans, famous for its traditional windmills and Dutch heritage. A canal cruise offered a unique perspective of the city, while music workshops with local clinicians enabled students to further develop their ensemble skills. A highlight of our time in Amsterdam was an evening performance at the beautiful Amstelkerk, where the church’s exceptional acoustics enhanced an outstanding musical experience.
In Berlin, students participated in additional workshops before performing at the historic Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. As one of Europe’s most vibrant cities, Berlin offered countless learning opportunities. Students visited famous sites including Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall and the popular Billie Eilish Wall, as well as the interactive DDR Museum, which provided fascinating insights into everyday life in former East and West Berlin.
As we made our way towards our final destination, Frankfurt, we enjoyed a more relaxed pace, travelling through the beautiful German towns of Wittenberg, Leipzig and Eisenach, the birthplace of renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach. These visits provided valuable cultural and musical connections that further enriched the educational experience of the tour.
Beyond the performances and sightseeing, the tour fostered lasting friendships, personal growth and wonderful memories for all involved. Our students represented the College with pride, demonstrating outstanding behaviour, enthusiasm and musicianship throughout the trip. They were truly a joy to travel with and should be commended for the way they embraced every opportunity presented to them. They also played an important role in the daily logistics of the tour, assisting with the packing and unpacking of the bus, including suitcases, a very heavy double bass, multiple cellos, a keyboard and numerous equipment cases.
A sincere thank you goes to the staff who accompanied and supported our students throughout the tour: Mrs Lockyer, Mrs Gordon, Rev. Yarrow, Ms Fixter and Nurse Melissa. Their care, dedication and commitment helped make the 2026 European Music Tour such a rewarding and memorable experience. Thanks also to our Music Administrator, Samantha Cavaliere, and our tour manager, Chris Gibbs, whose extensive behind-the-scenes work contributed greatly to the success of the tour.
