Tips for building resiliency in children returning to  school after holidays

To help children build resilience as they return to school after holidays,

parents can implement the following strategies:

Encourage open communication: Create a judgment-free space for children to share their worries about schoolwork, friendships, or unkind behavior. Listen and validate their feelings without dismissing concerns or jumping to solutions.

Establish consistent routines: Discuss and establish simple back-to-school routines together, including getting ready for school, participating in after-school activities, managing downtime, approaching homework, and following bedtime schedules.

Prepare together: Involve children in packing bags, choosing outfits, and organizing supplies. This builds anticipation and gives them a sense of control.

Validate feelings: Acknowledge children's emotions, such as nervousness, sadness, or overwhelm, and offer support.

Share stories: Talk about your own back-to-school memories to build empathy and normalise their experience.

Create connection rituals: Designate a space for essentials and create small daily rituals like a special handshake or a morning mantra to foster emotional security.

By implementing these strategies, parents can help children feel seen, supported, and ready to thrive during the transition back to school.
