A message from the Principal

As we move towards the end of Semester One, I have found myself reflecting on just how fortunate we are to be part of Victoria's government school system.
Public education is something that can often be taken for granted. Yet every day, across our state, hundreds of thousands of children walk through the gates of government schools where they are welcomed, challenged, supported and inspired by dedicated teachers and support staff. These schools bring together children from different backgrounds, cultures, experiences and perspectives, creating vibrant learning communities that reflect the diversity and strength of modern Australia.
At St Kilda Park Primary School, we are incredibly proud to be part of this tradition.
When I walk through our classrooms each day, I see students engaged in rich and meaningful learning. I see teachers who are deeply committed to their craft and continually refining their practice based on the latest educational research. I see children learning to read, write, think critically, solve problems, perform, create, collaborate and develop the skills they will need for the future. I see kindness, perseverance and curiosity in action.
I also see something that is uniquely powerful about government education. Every child who walks through our gates belongs here. We are proud to be a school that welcomes and supports all learners and provides every student with access to high-quality educational opportunities, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Over the past few weeks alone, our students have participated in experiences as diverse as swimming lessons at MSAC, a medieval history excursion to Kryal Castle, visits to South Melbourne Market, cross country competitions and inter-school sport. These opportunities sit alongside a rigorous, evidence-informed curriculum delivered every day in our classrooms. Together, they help create the broad and balanced education that every child deserves.
Perhaps this is a story that we do not tell often enough. While public discussion about education can sometimes focus on challenges, I believe there is much to celebrate.
Victoria's government schools are filled with talented students, dedicated staff and supportive families. They are places where young people discover who they are, what they are capable of and how they can contribute to their communities.
As many families will know, we are already well underway with planning for the 2027 school year. Foundation enrolments for next year are currently open, and the Victorian Government's statewide enrolment timeline requires applications to be submitted by 31 July.
If you have a younger child due to start school next year, I encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible through the VicStudents online enrolment portal. Likewise, if you have friends, neighbours, colleagues or family members who are beginning to think about school options, I would encourage you to share your experiences of SKiPPS and the broader government education system.
As a relatively small school, one of our greatest strengths is our ability to truly know every child. We combine the opportunities and expertise of a high-performing school with the warmth, connection and sense of belonging that comes from being part of a close-knit community. We are enormously proud of the learning, wellbeing and opportunities we provide for our students, and we love welcoming prospective families through our school
Most importantly, thank you to our current families for the trust you place in us each day. Your partnership, support and advocacy are what make schools like ours thrive. Together, we are not only supporting the children currently in our classrooms but also helping to strengthen and celebrate a government education system that remains one of Victoria's greatest assets.
In a world where people are often quick to focus on what is wrong, I think it is worth taking a moment to recognise what is right. Here in Victoria, we are fortunate to have a public education system that opens doors, changes lives and creates opportunities for every child. That is something worth celebrating.
