Foundation Performing Arts – Fun with Music and Drama 🎶🎭
Foundation students had a fantastic time in Performing Arts this term, starting and ending each lesson with some of the class’s favourite action songs — singing, moving and having fun together! WE have continued focussing on Drama.
Some of the activities that we have done:
Students played a creative version of the ‘Freeze’ dance game, where they had to suddenly stop dancing when the music stopped and instantly act out a character, from superheroes to someone feeling very sick or even posing for a photo shoot.
We also explored teamwork and imagination with a challenging drama game: in pairs, two “artists” had to guide a third student into a specified pose or character, taking turns and moving only one body part at a time. This fun activity encouraged creativity, cooperation, and lots of laughter, as students brought their characters to life in the most inventive ways!
Great work Preps!
Level 1 Performing Arts – “Voices on the Farm” 🐷🐑🐔🐴
Level 1 students have had lots of fun performing their play “Voices on the Farm.” Each animal group — sad sheep, silly chickens, angry pigs and happy horses — shared how they felt about the farmer using voice, body language and facial expressions. Students enjoyed acting out their animal characters and showing how each emotion could also be expressed through dance.
This semester, students have been working towards the following I can statements:
- I can change my voice to sound like a character.
 - I can show character emotion through facial expressions and body gestures.
 - I can perform in a scene of a play to an audience by saying my lines clearly and acting like the character (I had the option to read from the script).

Students have watched their recorded plays and completede a short reflection to celebrate their learning and performances. Level 1 also have/will have enjoyed sharing their play video with their buddies during their Thursday buddy session, then completed a follow-up ‘Zones of Regulations’ task with their buddies. This was a wonderful way of celebrating their performing and dancing achievements. Level 1 students should be proud of their efforts (imagination, bravery, and collaboration) in bringing Voices on the Farm to the stage!
Well done Level 1!
Level 2 Performing Arts – Roar at the Zoo 🎭🦁
Students in Level 2 have been busy performing and recording their original play Roar at the Zoo! This creative performance explored how emotions can be shown through drama and dance. The story followed a group of zoo animals who experienced a mix of feelings when the lion escaped. The zookeeper checked on each animal group—sad penguins, frightened monkeys, and angry elephants—to see how they were feeling. Each group acted out their emotion using facial expressions, body language, and voice before performing a dance that expressed the same feeling. When the lion finally appeared (he’d just been sleeping behind a rock!), the animals celebrated together with a lively group dance they created themselves.
Through this unit, students have been working towards the following “I can” statements:
- I can use different facial expressions, body language and gestures to show how a character may feel.
 - I can perform in a scene of a play with confidence, using voice, movement and expression to bring the character to life and engage the audience.
 - I can make my own group dance using locomotive and non-locomotive movements.
 - I can respond to drama by expressing what I enjoyed and why.

Week 1, Level 2 students finalised choreographing their groups dance moves, practised and then performed, their performances were recorded to add to our class movie. We have now finished filming all acting and dance performances and have watched the videos in class. Students are completed their reflection sheets to think about what they enjoyed, how they worked in their groups, and how well they used expression, movement, and teamwork in their performance.
Students should feel proud of their creativity, confidence and teamwork in bringing Roar at the Zoo to life!
Congrats Level 2!

Welcome back to Term 4 in Performing Arts. We have many exciting things happening in this jam-packed last term of 2025!
The Grade 3 and 4’s finished up their drama role play script performances these first two weeks back. It’s been wonderful to see the positive collaboration many groups had while rehearsing and the performances in front of their class peers was a huge success! Well done to all students who gave it a red hot go, overcame some stage jitters or shone in the spotlight. All superstars!!
The Grade 5 and 6’s have been split into their respective years levels for these next few weeks of Term 4 during their PA lessons. The Grade 5’s are working on a music project, based on an artist, musician or band. Their criteria list is long and extensive to maximise research. So the rest of the class will be learning a bucket load of information about a band or singer they may never have heard of before!
While the 5’s are busy researching, the 6’s are learning a dance routine for their Grade 6 Graduation! I’m hoping the choreography I’ve put together will be loved by the family members at Graduation later in December. I’m super proud of the 6’s who are giving it their all to learn the routine. The Grade 6 Graduation in which the dance will be performed will be the night before the Christmas concert, on Wednesday Dec 10th, at Eltham High School.
IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE!
Mark your calendars!!! Term 4 brings the whole school together for the;
Every year this night turns into a roaring success, thanks to the big turn out, joyful singing and performances, outstanding Christmas outfits, plus the holiday spirit that all students and families bring. Each year level will be performing plus the Buddies. Families can bring picnic rugs and food from 5pm. The Eltham Rotary Sausage Sizzle will be on also, so all we need is our school community spirit and some cracking Melbourne weather - which needs to be all sunshine and zero rain!
More information about the order of performances will be out in the Week 8 newsletter.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend,
