Year 7 Parliament House Excursion

Belinda Kemp
Head of Learning - Humanities
During the first four weeks of Term 4, Year 7 students at Brunswick Secondary College have had the exciting opportunity to visit Parliament House as part of their upcoming study of Civics. Each class has made the journey by walking to Jewell Station, catching the train into the city, and passing through security at Parliament’s grand entrance before beginning their guided tour.
Students were fascinated by the stunning architecture and rich history of the building. Many were especially impressed by the ornate gold decorations on the ceilings and the grandeur of the chambers, estimated to be worth approximately $10,000,000.

The tour also included a visit to the Parliament Library, where students learned about Victoria’s political history and the vital role members of Parliament play in representing their communities.

One particularly memorable moment was hearing about the mystery of the missing ceremonial mace, with a $50,000 reward still offered for its return! Throughout the visit, students asked thoughtful, inquisitive questions and demonstrated great curiosity about how democracy works in Victoria.

My favourite part was visiting the Legislative Assembly, because I loved the ornate decorations and how every part of the room had a different story behind it.
