Prep Newsletter – Week Highlights

What a fun and exciting week it has been in Prep! We were thrilled to welcome a new international student, Mia, to our class. She has been a wonderful addition, and it’s been heartwarming to see all of our students showing such compassion and kindness in making her feel welcome.

Literacy

It’s been a fun week of recapping our learning while also exploring some new digraphs – /ck/ for Black Duck, /sh/ for shed and shop, and /th/ for thud, thump, thunk. The students continue to impress us with their growing phonological knowledge and their ability to apply it confidently in both reading and writing.

We’ve also been practising reading with more expression, which has brought lots of giggles and drama to our reading sessions! It’s been wonderful being back in the library and seeing students share such a genuine love of reading.

We also had an extraordinary experience in the classroom this week that became the inspiration for our first persuasive writing piece. While Mie-Mie was at a meeting, Amy and another teacher were in the classroom when a magpie flew in! Amy kept everyone calm while the magpie tried to find its way out. In a moment of heroism (with a little help from Mie-Mie’s jacket! – as MieMie firmly believes her jacket was the real hero), Amy safely captured the magpie and released it outside.

We later discovered, thanks to Zac H from Year 6, that the magpie was a female, as she had grey on her back. The students turned this wild event into a persuasive writing challenge, and we were so proud of their creativity and confidence—it was their first ever persuasive piece!

Numeracy

This week, we’ve had lots of fun recapping addition and subtraction. Revisiting these key skills is so important, as they form the foundation for many future maths concepts. Students have enjoyed using different strategies and resources to solve problems and explain their thinking.

Inquiry

We have kicked off our new inquiry unit and the excitement is real! Students have each created their own imaginary animal by combining three different animals. They can’t wait to work with their Year 5 buddies to research their animal’s habitat, diet, appearance, and some fun facts. We’re looking forward to seeing what creative creatures come to life!

Moments That Made Us Smile

We are so proud of our students for their wonderful assembly speech, where they confidently recapped our recent excursion. They spoke clearly and with great expression, sharing their favourite moments with the school. It was lovely to see how much effort they put into practising their parts and how well they responded to feedback from their classmates.

The teachers were also very lucky this week to enjoy a special morning treat — delicious dumplings made by some of the TheirCare students! A big thank you to Salima and the team at TheirCare for running such a fun cooking activity and sharing their tasty creations with us.
