Debating is an invaluable skill that offers students a multitude of benefits, from building confidence and honing public speaking abilities to fostering critical thinking and social awareness. By engaging in debates, students sharpen their logical reasoning, stay informed on current affairs, and apply these skills across all subject areas. Aligned with the Victorian curriculum's focus on "Critical and Creative Thinking," "Ethical," "Intercultural," and "Personal and Social" development, debating enriches every aspect of a student's education.
We congratulate all our participants for their dedication and outstanding performances, showcasing the power of informed and respectful discourse. Congratulations to the best speakers for each debate: Molly Walker, Cairo Cullinane, Lucas Barrosa, and Daisy Rensch.
Last Tuesday saw 12 students in years 7-9 stepped up to the mark to represent their houses in the junior house debating, arguing on the topic of whether or not technology makes us smarter. All students should be extraordinarily proud of their efforts, especially those who filled in at such short notice. Public speaking is never easy and takes a lot of practice, so all of the younger students who gave it a shot should be congratulated on their courage. Overall, Laidlaw Juniors defeated Young, and Berry Juniors took the win over Learmonth. A further thanks goes to the adjudicators, Miss MacLeod and Mrs Churchill for volunteering their time to help this event run smoothly.

Last Thursday year 11 and 12 students battled it out in house debating. The topic for the senior debate was whether ‘social media has improved communication’. With Laidlaw winning against Berry and Young House defeating Learmonth it was amazing to see different people stepping in and giving debating a go. Thank you to Miss Macleod and Mr Horne for adjudicating the senior debates.
