STEAM Update
Mr Whitten
It’s been a very busy term in STEAM here at EPS, packed with events like the Science Week Show from Street Science, Lego Masters and most recently a STEAM experience day for some of our 5/6s hosted by ARCADIS. Take a look at what the students have been up to in their weekly STEAM sessions too.
The Prep classes have been investigating their big question, “What is it made of and how does it move?” They started the term thinking about the materials used in constructing swings and fairground rides before making their own versions from Lego. Some students even linked their Lego Spike creations to the app and created simple instructions for sounds and movement.
From Week 3, the Preps have been doing their “Mission to Mars” project supported by Inspire Robotics. They’ve built rovers, rockets and landing craft - always thinking about the materials used and how each would move. This week the Prep-designed rockets have been launched so they got to see the result of their design decisions.
Students in Year 1 and 2 have used their STEAM sessions to investigate their big question, “How can we help the earth?” They’ve learnt about pollination, how animals are adapted to their habitats and the importance of wetlands. After learning how to control Spike Lego motors, lights and sensors, they’ve been able to make Lego creations to show their understanding and to spread the word about helping our planet.
Year 3 and 4 have been busy in STEAM learning about how to use drag and drop coding in Scratch to create games. Jacob, from Skill Samurai Elsternwick, led them through the process of coding games, debugging and making the product engaging for the user. Everyone’s super excited to use these skills to build their own games at the start of next term, before Jacob comes back to judge the comp and give some feedback about how they went.
Year 5 and 6 have spent this term designing, making and coding Lego robots for the “Rescue Line” Challenge. Their robots needed to follow a line, locate a casualty in a chemical spill and push them to safety! The rescue robots battled it out this week in a rescue championship!
Term 4 promises to be another big one in STEAM at EPS…watch this space, it’s going to be epic!
