Review of Service Learning - Shining Our Light (SOL) Service - Parent Survey
The College’s Mission is “Inspired by the Gospel and Edmund Rice, our purpose is to educate resilient and spirited men who are challenged to serve. We are preparing faithful and inclusive men for a dynamic world.”
One way we aim to do this is by engaging each student in service as part of their enrolment at the College and part of their everyday life. This is what we call Service Learning – people learning through service and learning about the importance of service in the world, which is founded on our Faith Tradition. As an Edmund Rice school it is imperative we carry on the charism of service to others and as Blessed Edmund Rice said ‘give to the poor in handfuls’.
The current requirements are:
- Stage 3 (Year 5-6) - Earning 8 points each year
- Stage 4 (Year 7-8) - Earning 10 points each year
- Stage 5 (Year 9-10) - Earning 15 points each year
- Stage 6 (Year 11) - Social Justice Service (SJS) - 20 hours are be completed.
Our SOL Service program has been running since 2020, coming in at a challenging time. While it has had great success in many areas, there is always a need to review and improve practices. Please take this opportunity to give feedback on the program thus far.
Please be mindful that this program was designed to cater for different age groups, having students look outside themselves to help create a better community and world for all. It is about time, service, and learning, not about fundraising. It is not co-curricular, nor replacing any justice partnerships across cohorts and the College.
This survey is part of a more complete review process including consultation sessions with students and a survey of parents/carers. All data will be reviewed, and the program will be tweaked to suit the needs and goals of the community. Thank you for taking the time to respond to this survey.

Father’s Day Mass and Morning Tea - RSVP
On behalf of the College, I invite all current students’ fathers and grandfathers to our Father’s Day Mass to be held in the College Gymnasium on Friday 30 August 2024. This Mass is a wonderful annual occasion when we invite all fathers to the College to celebrate and give thanks for the importance of our fathers in our lives.
There will be two Masses depending on the House your son belongs to:
7:45 AM Berg, Coghlan and Crichton
9:30 AM Hanrahan, Hickey and Rice
Morning Tea will be served for fathers/grandfathers only at the Scientia Building in between the two Masses.
If you would like to attend, please use this link to complete the RSVP form.
