Werribee Zoo: Year 5
Words from Werribee
On 14 August, Year 5 students spent the day at Werribee Zoo participating in an 'Animal Adaptations' program as part of their Science this term.
Students were given a variety of animal skulls to examine the bone structure, teeth and eye sockets. They wandered the zoo looking for behavioural adaptations and enjoyed getting up close with the African savannah animals during the safari ride.
Below are some comments from students:
"When we walked past the meercat enclosure, we noticed an adaptation they had. Meercats assign 'guard duty' and the meercat chosen would stand on its hind legs
and look out for predators."
"We got to feel different types of animal fur and horns."
"The lion has adapted to have sharper teeth to catch and tear the meat off its prey."
"Herbivores have eye sockets on the sides of their heads to help them spot prey,
while carnivore animals have eyes that are closer together to hunt with."
"We watched a lion eating a horses head!"
"The giraffe came so close to the safari bus we could nearly touch it."
"I liked being with my friends and seeing the meercats the best."
The students had a great time excavating, exploring and researching dinosaur fossils.
