Prep Art
In Art, Week 7 started with students visiting and admiring the impressive NAIDOC Week masterpiece they created alongside Tamay, our Indigenous artist. Our Prep students experienced a deep sense of pride and accomplishment as they saw their artwork they created in Week 1, Term 3, come to life. Parents, grandparents, and guardians are warmly invited to visit the front office to view this remarkable artwork and hear your child share their learning journey! I am so proud of all our students!
Continuing with our exploration of bold colours, shapes, and lines, Week 7 also focused on Pop Art. Students created their own pop art word bubbles and learned about the influential American artist Roy Lichtenstein. A key figure in the 1960s Pop Art movement, Lichtenstein used a distinctive dot technique to mimic comic book style, which inspired his vibrant and iconic work. His colourful pop art explosions were some of his most iconic pieces of work.
In Week 8, students explored the life of an artist by examining the work of Romero Britto. They succeeded in the lesson by analysing gallery art, applying these observations to their own creations, and understanding how art can convey an artist’s life and experiences. Well done superstars!
MEDIA: With Mr. Brendan Howarth
New Media rotation:
Hello families!
My name is Mr. Howarth and I am teaching Media from Years One to Six this year. Beginning in Week 8, I am now teaching the remaining classes in the school who have previously had Music and Mandarin.
In Media, we learn how we can communicate messages and ideas through different media mediums, including photography, sound, filming, advertising, visual narratives, etc. Students also analyse and interpret media texts with cross-curricular connections made with Literacy, Numeracy, Language and the Arts.
Our unit topics include migration, Indigenous history, our emotions, advertising, and Who We Are.
I am looking forward to getting to know all students throughout the year.
Visual Art
During the past couple of weeks students celebrated 2024 Book Week. The theme for this year is ‘Reading is Magic’ and within Art, we chose to celebrate a classic and favourite, the characters from ‘Harry Potter’. Students across Grades 1 to 6 chose various mediums including watercolour, crayon, oil pastel and marker to shade and colour Harry Potter scenes and characters. Below are some examples from across the year levels.
Grade 1
During Week 7, Grade 1 students consolidated their study on living and Non-living things by watching a video on animals and their young. Later they continued to work on their cat drawings, showing that they were thinkers, by using their prior knowledge of pattern, shape and colour to create vibrant
balanced designs using watercolour and oil pastel and crayon, as their mediums.
Grade 2
In Week 7, Grade 2 students continued their inquiry on Indigenous first nations customs and traditions. Using the element of Line and shape they drew Maori Mask and then outlined their designs with thick black markers.
Grade 3
In Week 7, Grade 3 students learnt about a new tool used in printing, called a brayer. A brayer is a tool made of rubber and a handle, that is used to evenly distribute ink or paint onto a gel plate before pressing onto paper. Students showed they could apply an even layer of acrylic paint to their letter stamps and transfer these onto their prepared backgrounds.
Grade 4
In Week 7, Grade 4 students continued their exploration of Pop art design in media and advertising. They finalised their designs for their own advertisement campaigns and looked at the properties of a new material called foam board. Foam board is used for etching designs onto. Later, acrylic paint was rolled onto their foam etch, before transferring this onto the water-coloured backgrounds that were created at an earlier stage.
Grade 5
In Week 7, Grade 5 students continued to work on their city scape artworks. They completed a water-coloured background; painting one half of the paper with warm blends of watercolours and the other half with cool blends of watercolours. Students were introduced to a new material called foam board that was being used to etch the ‘cityscape’ onto. After drawing their ‘cityscape’ designs onto the foam board and rolling black acrylic paint to their foam etch, they transferred this onto one side of the background. They folded their paper in half and opened the work to reveal a reflection of the city scape.
Grade 6
In Week 7, Grade 6 students continued to work on their futuristic creatures, finalising their designs and outlining their work with black markers before painting them with gold and silver metallic paint.

!Hola familia!
Prep to Year 2: We’re practicing basic greetings, colors, and numbers in Spanish.
We’re also exploring the amazing animals of the South American rainforest.
Years 3 and 4: Students are learning about cultural celebrations in Spanish-speaking countries and discovering different traditions and customs. They’re also practicing numbers and learning about lugares de la ciudad (places in the city).
Years 5 and 6: Students are researching a Spanish-speaking country of their choice and creating presentations using Canva or PowerPoint.
They’re also practicing numbers from 20 to 100, learning the days of the week and months of the year in Spanish.
¡Hasta luego!
DANCE.
Dance has seen some fun class exercises where the Preps have been learning about different shapes. We have created various dance combinations to form into different shapes as part of the routines. Through this students would identify the different shapes, while also reflecting on the past lessons and acknowledging the left and right sides and various levels also. Once the students had learnt and identified the different shapes, we would then change up the order of the combinations to help exercise and build on memory retention, patterns, adapting to quick changes and building confidence in the process.
WAKAKIRRI.....(Dance)
It’s been a huge couple of weeks for our amazing dance extension students in Wakakirri! I would first like to say CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Wakakirri performers and staff on being formally invited to perform at the 2024 Wakakirri Awards night on Friday 13th September! This is a huge achievement for our students, staff, school and Saltwater community, especially being the first year we have entered this prestigious event. The awards night is also the Victorian state finals, and the finalists from these finals will then be sent through to the national finals to compete against the rest of Australia. We have been advised that Saltwater College has already won a state award but will only find out on the night which award it is!
Our students have been working extremely hard to prepare for the big night ahead, and are super excited to have been nominated to perform at the awards night. Our students also performed for our Primary assembly last week showcasing to all staff and students what we’ve all been up to. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance and saw all the hard work everyone had been up to. Proud staff were so happy to see there students shine up on stage! The Wakakirri awards night is only a week away and we can’t wait for Saltwater to hit the stage! We will update you on the next letter on the amazing journey ahead and how it all went! Chookas to all involved!
VSSS.....(Dance)
Our Victorian State School Spectacular dancers have been working and rehearsing hard also, as we are only a week away from the big show next Saturday 14th September! Students have been having final rehearsals to clean up minor details in the choreography and performance qualities, to help prepare them to face their 10,000 strong audience next week! Each rehearsal has seen the team get stronger and more confident both individually and as a team, and has seen the excitement build for what’s yet to come. This will be the 3rd team to ever represent our Saltwater community for VSSS. We are beyond proud of each and every student and staff member involved, and can’t wait for you to see what they’ve all been up to! Limited tickets are still available on Ticketek! See you there!
