Year Seven
English
Our Year Seven English students have been hard at work this term, delving into the timeless structure of the Hero’s Journey to craft their own narratives. This writing project has so far seen them develop unique heroes, taking them on imaginative journeys that begin in the "ordinary world." Each stage of their story has been thoughtfully planned and carefully written, allowing students to explore the challenges and transformations their heroes must face.
Students began by establishing the "ordinary world" of their hero—a familiar setting that sets the stage for the adventure to come. With each new chapter, they have gradually built their stories, guiding their heroes through trials and tribulations, and ultimately toward a climactic resolution.
By the end of this term, each student will have a final piece of writing to be proud of—a complete narrative that showcases their hard work and imagination. Have a look at some of the students' amazing "ordinary worlds" where they set the stage for the heroic adventures that lie ahead.
Mathematics
From not knowing what pronumerals were, to being able to use different skills in solving equations, our students have shown massive improvements in the area of algebra.
Since the start of week 7, students have started the new topic of geometric reasoning. Students will learn about angles within different shapes, and they have been showing great interests in finding missing angles in triangles and quadrilaterals.
Our students are going to create their Artworks in terms of parallel, perpendicular line and so on, we cannot wait to see what masterpiece that our students are about to create.
Visual Art:
Our year 7 students are making fantastic progress as they approach the completion of their first unit of inquiry, "By mastering the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, we can effectively compose and critique visual works, exploring how these fundamental concepts guide artistic expression and convey meaning in diverse contexts." Throughout this unit, students have participated in a variety of dynamic workshops centred around these essential building blocks of art. They were then given the opportunity to dive deeper into their favourite elements and principles, using their newfound understanding to create their own unique artworks. Over the past few weeks, students have been working through their first MYP Design cycle, bringing their creative visions to life in their final products.
Science
From August 10th to 18th, our school celebrated Science Week with a flurry of exciting activities that brought the wonders of science to life for our students. The week was filled with hands-on experiments, interactive demonstrations, and fun learning experiences that ignited curiosity and a love for science among students of all ages.
The festivities kicked off with a special assembly, where the science teachers took to the stage to perform some fantastic experiments. Students watched in awe as we demonstrated the "Chemical Traffic Light," a fascinating chemical reaction that changes colour as if by magic! The excitement continued with the spectacular "Fire Bubbles" demonstration, where bubbles filled with gas were ignited to create a mesmerizing display of fire that safely danced on the water.
During lunchtime throughout the week, our science lab was abuzz with activities as students participated in a series of fun and engaging experiments. One of the highlights was the "Ice Cream in a Bag" activity, where students learned about the principles of freezing point while making their delicious ice cream. Another favourite was the "Elephant Toothpaste" experiment, which produced an enormous foamy eruption, illustrating the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and demonstrating an exothermic reaction.
In addition to these exciting chemistry experiments, students also had the opportunity to explore biology in an interactive way. One lunchtime activity focused on how different species have adapted their beaks to pick up various types of food. Using a range of tools and materials to simulate different beak shapes, students experimented with picking up different kinds of “food,” learning firsthand how adaptation plays a crucial role in the survival of species.
Science Week was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiasm and participation of our students and teachers. It was wonderful to see our students so engaged and excited about learning science through hands-on activities and demonstrations. We hope that this Science week has inspired many budding scientists and fostered a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
