Term 2 Community Day: Sustainability & Endangered Species

Term 2's Community Day on the 13th of May followed the theme of "Sustainability and Endangered Animals" as brainstormed by the Student Leadership Team.

Each leadership group collated, and some collaborated in the planning of the various stalls as exhibited on the day. All funds from the sale of hand-made and recycled seed bookmarks by the Library Leadership Team and Art Captains, the sale of baked goods and paintings run by David as well as the gold coin donations from the casual dress day all contributed to our donation to Zoos Victoria’s Fighting Extinction program.

Zoos Victoria is a non-profit organisation whose "Fighting Extinction" campaign encapsulates their many programs that strive to raise awareness and support the conservation of threatened species.

As one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, housing over 200,000 native species, it is the responsibility of us, as citizens of Australia to carefully consider and protect our fragile ecosystems who are enduring peril due to human activity.

Our school was, subsequently, inspired by their "School's Against Extinction" program, which is an awareness campaign that inspires schools to take actions in raising awareness of local endangered species, which was targeted by our House Captain's scavenger hunt, the Year 12 Environment Science student's Orange Bellied Parrot Stall and the various other activities hosted by the SRC and other Student Leadership groups. Overall, the event turn-out was greatly uplifting as many students partook in the activity stalls, as well as the Green Team's House Litter Challenge and donations that contributed to our Old Mobile Phones collection.

We encourage the school community to further educate themselves on their local wildlife and take action in their daily lives to make the world better for all of the species who live in it.

As the Sustainability Captains of the school, Isabella and Katie, we would like to thank everyone who has helped us plan, organise the event and extend our gratitude to those whom have participated and actively engaged with our hard work.

It is because of all of you that we are able to be the change we wish to see in the world.

Thank you so much for your support. We couldn't do it without you!

Student Leadership Team

Following a highly successful Community Day on Monday, May 13th, our student leaders gathered for team-building activities aimed at enhancing leadership skills, fostering mentorship, and promoting collaboration.

All participating student leaders, both junior and senior, thoroughly enjoyed engaging with their respective teams and interacting across different groups.

The event was skillfully facilitated by Madi, Anton, Hibah and Aimee (our four College Captains), who ensured a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive atmosphere for all. It was evident that everyone had a wonderful time, making it a fitting celebration of the hard work and achievements of Community Day.

I am incredibly proud and grateful to work with such motivated and inspiring students and leaders.

What an exceptional team!

Product Design & Technology

In Unit 1 Product Design Technology, across Terms 1 and 2, students have been working in groups to create a portfolio and a product.

As Unit 1 is drawing to a close and students are nearing the end of their practical work, they are starting to see the results of their efforts.

There is some fantastic work being produced by these Year 11’s.

Here, Alexander Delifotis, Jordan Scott, and Chris Tsipos (not pictured) are demonstrating critical and creative problem solving as they work though how exactly they should construct the armrests for their rocking chair.

Space-X-plore Tour

Brentwood is looking for students who will be in years 8-11 in 2025 with a passion and interest in space to travel with like-minded students from partner schools in the Waverley network to the USA in September 2025 on the Space- X-plore program with Global Learning Expeditions. This international camp was run successfully in 2023 and is once again being offered to interested students.

Highlights of the trip include the astronaut experience at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Orlando, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

For parents we have set up a unique trip page through YouLi (You Live to Travel) for our Waverley network school group via the link below. You are invited to register your details to be kept in the loop regarding an upcoming information session for the trip on Tuesday 29th November at 6pm at South Oakleigh Secondary college, in the Lecture Theatre.  It will also be live streamed so families can log in remotely if they can’t attend in person, details for which will be provided through this link.

Visit: https://youli.io/t/gle/usa-stem-space-tour-mars

Please note registration here and attendance at the information session do not commit you to attending the camp or any financial commitment. At this time, we are seeking interest to see if we have enough students to make the trip viable.

Please find attached a flyer for the program with more detail and costs, do not hesitate to contact myself directly if you have any questions.

Electronic device use at Brentwood Canteen

We would like to thank you for your continued support with the Personal Mobile Devices Policy. We have noticed students trying to utilise their phones as a payment method at the canteen and ask that families look to make other arrangements.

Mobile phones are not to be used at the canteen as they are not allowed to be in use between the school hours of 8.45am and 3.05pm.

Students can make payment via an EFTPOS card or cash.

Thank you for your cooperation.
