Year 9 take steps to elevate their skills

On Monday 18 June, a group of Year 9s took to the tools to try their hand at stair making at a workshop organised by the Head Start team. Students opted in to this pilot workshop, which was part of Head Start’s ‘Careers to classroom’ initiative that aims to link industry and schools.

Under the watchful eyes of S&A Stairs’ master craftsmen Brad and Pat, the Year 9 students worked in teams to build some impressive staircases and dismantle them after construction.

The workshop was a huge success. The students engaged with the task, problem-solved and asked thoughtful questions. We were impressed with the display of motivation, maturity and teamwork.

“It was an eye-widening experience. It gave me the chance to try out a job and have a go at building the stairs. The people running the workshop were friendly and helpful and made me feel comfortable.”

Thanks to Brad and Pat from S&A Stairs for taking the time to give our students insight into a trade that’s on the ‘up and up’. Keep an eye out for more industry tours and hands-on workshops as part of Head Start’s ‘Careers to classroom’ initiative.
