The Mabo Decision

On the 3rd of June it will be the 32nd anniversary of the Mabo Decision.  The judgments of the high court in the Mabo case held that native title existed for all indigenous people in Australia prior to the establishment of the British colony.  It is a very important day on the Australian calendar.  It recognised that aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land.  The decision was named after Eddie Mabo who led the fight to change land laws.  He worked on the Mabo case for 10 years but unfortunately he died a few months before he could learn the high court's decision.  Today native title has been recognised over more than one million square kilometres of Australian land and waterways.
